Think for a second of the WWE as the glorified, high budget pantomime it really is, which means we as the audience need heroes such as John Cena and even anti-heroes like CM Punk. However, we also need the villain, the guy we all love to hate and in my opinion ‘The Intellectual Saviour Of The Masses’, Damien Sandow fits this role perfectly but isn’t being given the push needed to propel his career. The moment he targeted an injured John Cena and cashed in his Money In The Bank contract a while back could have been the springboard for success.
Now don’t get me wrong, I think we all knew there was no way he would be allowed to actually win the championship right there and then but the cold calculated aggression he showed, along with the way he addresses the crowd would prove to be great attributes for a true heel champion.
Nevertheless for now at least, he finds himself in limbo, lingering around the Intercontinental Title for a short while and losing to Big E Langston when he got his shot. Then we see him entered into all the stipulation matches (that I hate to see) and what’s worse, he loses them! And lastly came the final straw for myself and clearly for Sandow when he was put into one of the biggest gimmick matches in history, ‘Bad Santa vs Good Santa’. Come on WWE, that is why you have people like 3MB and R-Truth, please don’t go putting The Worlds Strongest Man Mark Henry and Damien Sandow into these farcical matches, it’s painful to see.
Thankfully, in the past week it was portrayed that Sandow himself, had finally snapped. He declared that if he did not beat his WWE Universe chosen opponent, which turned out to be The Great Khali, he would quit. Thankfully to my relief, Sandow pulled off the victory, albeit in controversial fashion as replays showed that Khali’s shoulder was not pinned to the mat as the referee counted the one two three.
As we head into 2014, the stage is set for a fantastic year in WWE and I firmly believe that given the right story line and backing, Damien Sandow could be a big part of the title picture this year, maybe in time Vince will see it my way too!
