Mae Young Passes Away at 90

WWE.com has announced that Hall of Famer Mae Young has passed away at the age of 90. Many wrestling news sources have reported Young’s declining health over the past few weeks.

This is a huge blow to the wrestling world. Young was a huge pioneer for women’s wrestling. Without Mae Young, we may never have seen women like Trish Stratus, Lita or AJ Lee.

Young was also fearless, and a friend to wrestlers everywhere. During her storyline romance with Mark Henry, Young – then in her late-70′s – allowed Bubba Ray Dudley to powerbomb her through a table, twice.

It will be interesting to see how the WWE handles this news. It may be too late to do anything for SmackDown, but we will hear a lot about Mae Young and her career, and the impact she had on WWE today, especially the Divas. For next Monday’s Raw, you’re still going to see Batista, and the final build to the Royal Rumble pay-per-view, but that’s all going to take a back seat as WWE says goodbye to one of the most important and influential figures in wrestling history.
