WWE.com announced Monday that The New Age Outlaws would get a shot at the WWE Tag Team Championships at Sunday’s Royal Rumble.
After defeating Cody Rhodes and Goldust on Friday Night SmackDown, thanks to a little help from Vickie Guerrero and Billy Gunn holding onto Cody’s tights, the WWE has decided to give The Outlaws a title shot.
All this has happened after The Outlaws abandoned CM Punk in a 6-man tag team match against The Shield on last Monday’s Raw, re-aligning with Triple H and joining The Authority.
This match will take place on the Royal Rumble Kickoff show, before the actual pay-per-view. I expect The Outlaws to come out with the win. Ever since the Rhodes brothers joined forces to win the tag championships, they seemed destined to clash in a singles match at WrestleMania XXX. I have gone back and forth on whether they should split up now, or at February’s Elimination Chamber, but I think it has to be now.
I think that Gunn should once again pin Cody to give The Outlaws the championships. Cody has been the victim of most of the pins that have befallen the Rhodes brothers recently, and I believe this is being done so that Goldust can blame Cody for their failures and turn heel. They don’t have to break up now, but the seeds should start to be planted. We should see Goldust show disdain for his brother in the weeks following the Royal Rumble. Elimination Chamber should be their last match as a team, and that is where Goldust should finally lose it.
I would like to see their team end in the Rumble match, with Goldust eliminating Cody, but I just don’t see it working. They will have 10 weeks between the Rumble and WrestleMania, and I just don’t think they could build that feud for that long.
