After watching last night’s WWE Raw, it’s obvious that the WWE is very high on Roman Reigns. With the Money in the Bank PPV coming up, they’re positioning him to potentially be one of the winners of the ladder match. Could we see Reigns as the WWE World Heavyweight Champion sooner rather than later?
Reigns is one of the eight performers who will be taking part in the Money in the Bank ladder match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship this Sunday. He’ll be in the ring with John Cena, Sheamus, Randy Orton, Bray Wyatt, Cesaro, Alberto Del Rio and Kane. This is generally the time of year when a lesser-known wrestler could hold the title, leading into Summerslam.
WWE has historically had their biggest and most impressive runs leading into and just after WrestleMania. The fact is — it’s a great time for Reigns to…ahem…take the reins. He’s fresh as a face, the crowd is into him and he’ll have a lot of storylines ready for him if he became champion. There’s just one major problem — he’s not ready for it.
To be the champion, you have to do one of two things at an elite level — promos or working matches. Reigns hasn’t had a ton of time to work on his promos, but the stuff he has done hasn’t exactly been all that impressive. He’s got a great look and he’s good at the monotone-type monster promo where he says few words and looks menacing, but that’s not good enough for a champion — especially a face champ.
His in-ring work has been average, though it’s obvious the WWE has been protecting him heavily, by putting him in so many tag matches. It allows Reigns to get his signature moves in without having to sell too much or get lost in the ring. Again, that’s fine for a mid-card role and it’s great for a role within a tag team or stable, but it’s not going to work as a champion.
For the sake of Reigns and his future with the WWE, I hope they hold off on his championship run. He’s got a great look, but he’s substandard in the other important areas. If they wanted to make him a heel champion and give him a mouthpiece, he could get away with it. Unfortunately, WWE faces are expected to sell, sell, sell and Reigns just isn’t ready for that. His time will come for sure, it’s just not right now.
