So, John Cena is champion again.
Normally, that sentence would make me cringe. But the only thing cringeworthy of Cena’s latest title victory is that Cena–who has minimal wrestling ability–is a 15-time champion. One less than the Nature Boy, Ric Flair.
But with the exception of that fact, the time was right for Cena to be crowned champion.
Here is why.
Fans have been clamoring for a title reign from Roman Reigns and Antonio Cesaro. Hell, the stadium almost erupted last night when it appeared that Bray Wyatt was going to win the title.
But for as satisfied as fans would have been if Reigns, Cesaro or Wyatt won the title on Sunday, they would have been equally disappointed when one of the three would have dropped the title at SummerSlam.
The fact of the matter is that whoever won the title last night would be nothing more than a transitional champion. That is why Cena is the perfect candidate. Fans do not want to Cena have an extended title run. That is why Cena will (SPOILER ALERT) lose the title to Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam.
For as many fans that wanted to cancel their WWE Network subscription after the Money in the Bank pay-per view last night, imagine how high the drop rate would be if Lesnar–a hated part-timer–took the title away from Cesaro, Reigns, or Wyatt at WWE’s biggest summer event.
Fans can live with Lesnar taking the title away from Cena.
Lesnar and Cena is actually a pretty good booking for WWE to have at SummerSlam. Despite being a part-timer, Lesnar certainly manages to generate a strong reaction from the WWE universe (Hence why Paul Heyman continues to remind us that Lesnar is the one that conquered The Undertaker’s Wrestlemania streak).
Cena, meanwhile, needs to be same character that has the hearts of kids and women across the nation.
WWE needs Lesnar to be the biggest heel since CM Punk during his title reign. Lesnar defeating Cena at SummerSlam would be one of the greatest recent feats by a heel. By doing that, WWE is setting themselves up with a golden opportunity by eventually having Lesnar put over on a young talent like Reigns or Cesaro by dropping the title to them.
So, there is no need to be up in arms with Cena’s latest victory, WWE actually got it right.
