WWE Battleground 2014: Final Match List

WWE Battleground comes your way from the Tampa Bay Times Forum in Tampa, Florida this Saturday, July 20, 2014. This is just the second event with the moniker “Battleground,” with the event being re-named in 2013. There are eight announced matches for the PPV, which will air LIVE on the WWE Network, starting at 8pm Eastern Time.

Matches announced:

  • Cameron vs. Naomi
  • Jack Swagger vs. Rusev
  • AJ Lee vs. Paige (Divas Title)
  • Dean Ambrose vs. Seth Rollins
  • The Usos vs. Luke Harper and Erick Rowan (2/3 falls for the Tag Titles)
  • Bray Wyatt vs. Chris Jericho
  • Intercontinental Championship Battle Royal
  • John Cena vs. Roman Reigns vs. Kane vs. Randy Orton (WWE World Heavyweight Championship match)

On the surface, this could be a hot show for the more interested WWE fans, but the draw for the casual fan just isn’t there. The women’s matches will be short, the Swagger/Rusev match belongs in 1985 and the tag titles haven’t been relevant since The Dudleys, Edge and Christian and The Hardy Boys were tearing it up.

With that said, Ambrose vs. Rollins should be a very good, heated match. The problem here is that neither are stars and the fact is, unless you watch the program on a regular basis, you’ll probably view this as the mid-card fodder it is. That’s the major issue with the product today. There are very few crossover performers who truly carry themselves as stars.

The days of having Triple H, The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin on each pay-per-view are long gone. Now, we’re left with John Cena and…that’s pretty much it.

The Wyatt/Jericho match should have higher stakes and should have been given more time so hopefully this won’t be the end of their feud. The IC championship battle royal should be fun and will give us a chance to see more wrestlers, but will they do the right thing and try to elevate someone or will they get cold feet and put the title back on Alberto Del Rio or Sheamus?

Lastly, the Fatal 4-Way for the championship should be a good match filled with numerous storylines. You can bet there will be a ton of interference and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Kane/Orton explode with Cena/Reigns being a big feud down the line.
