CM Punk will be returning to relevancy in the WWE once again. The catch being that those who have access to a Playstation or XBox device will be the ones privy to Punk’s return to relevancy.
2K announced on Monday that Punk will be featured in WWE 2K15’s revamped story mode that is being referred to as the 2K Showcase.
2K today announced details of 2K Showcase, the story-driven single-player campaign in WWE® 2K15, the forthcoming release in the flagship WWE video game franchise. Through high quality cinematics and historic WWE footage, players will intimately explore two notable WWE rivalries: the bitter rivalry between Triple H® and Shawn Michaels® from 2002 to 2004, as well as WWE 2K15 cover Superstar John Cena® and CM Punk®’s spirited rivalry spanning 2011 to 2013.
Lets answer the first question right away, no, Punk’s featured inclusion does not mean that the superstar is returning to WWE. There is a potential legal battle looming between Punk and WWE in light of Punk’s departure and the two sides want nothing to do with each other.
Therefore, the decision to feature Punk in WWE 2K15 likely was driven by 2K as opposed to WWE.
The Punk versus Cena rivalry was appointment television between 2011 and 2013. Between Punk walking out on the company with the WWE title after defeating Cena at the WWE Money in the Bank pay-per view in 2011 to Punk losing to Cena in 2013 on a Monday Night Raw before Wrestlemania 30. In that match on Raw, Cena put his place in the Wrestlemania 30 main event on the line.
Playing through and re-living the Cena/Punk rivalry in WWE 2K15 will certainly be a key component to the video game that is set to be released on October 26.
