The Authority storyline that has been at the center of WWE programming since last Summer and is one that has far exceeded it’s shelf life.

At one point during the summer of 2013, the plan was to end The Authority storyline at Wrestlemania 30. The plan was to create a power struggle between Stephanie McMahon, Vince McMahon, and Triple H. The idea behind the plan was that Stephanie and Triple H would become so overbearing as The Authority that Vince McMahon’s character would return and attempt to regain control.

  • The power struggle between Triple H and Vince McMahon would then lead to a match at Wrestlemania 30. In that match, Triple H would be fighting for himself while the rumor was that The Rock would be fighting for Vince McMahon. If Triple H defeated The Rock, then Triple H would continue to operate as The Authority figure on WWE programming. If The Rock defeated Triple H, then Vince McMahon would be re-inserted as The Boss on WWE programming.

Those plans were thwarted in favor of the “Yes Movement” and Vince McMahon’s character has not been used since the summer of 2013.

There have been rumors that Vince McMahon’s character is retired, but let’s face it, it’s Vincent Kennedy McMahon. McMahon and his ego likely would revive his character if it made sense.

During the Smackdown Tapings for the October 10 episode [SPOILER ALERT], there was a backstage segment between The Rock, Triple H, and Stephanie McMahon. In the segment, The Rock teased the possibility of facing Triple H one more time.

While that could be a playful tease by The Rock, it also could be a glimpse at the direction that WWE might take The Rock and Triple H at Wrestlemania 31.

The fact of the matter is that The Authority gimmick needs to come to an end at some point.

For WWE, what better end for The Authority gimmick than at Wrestlemania 31.

The set-up to this match would be simple. Triple H and Stephanie McMahon continue to be overbearing bosses who abuse their power. Then, come around February or even late January, Vince McMahon slowly begins to receive more mentions on WWE programming. The increase in mentions eventually lead to McMahon returning to confront his daughter and son-in-law’s abuse of power. McMahon says something along the lines of it’s time to put an end to this tyranny.

Triple H, outraged by McMahon’s return, demands a match between him and McMahon at Wrestlemania. McMahon gives Triple H his match but he announces that his opponent will be…and that is when The Rock’s music hits and the People’s champion returns to align with McMahon thus creating a booking between The Rock and Triple H for Wrestlemania 31.

A loss to The Rock at Wrestlemania 31 would end Triple H’s run as a heel and put an end to The Authority storyline.
