Is Camp WWE a Good Idea?

Camp WWE debuts on demand on the WWE Network after Payback but is it a good idea?

When WWE Network debuted it brought fans of the Attitude Era excited as it promised to show every WWE, WCW, and ECW pay per view in its entirety as originally aired even though WWE was in the midst of the PG era where all programming was classified as this.  While not every pay-per-view was truly unedited it did keep most of the TV-14 content from that era.

Still most of the original programming on the Network remained under the PG rating.  Recently shows such as The Edge & Christian Show have went back more towards content you would have seen prior to the PG Era.  Camp WWE is prepared to take things to an all new level as the animated series will be rated TV-MA.

The show is created by Seth Green who has had success with the Robot Chicken series as well so it should be well written and produced.  It also brings an edgier product to the WWE in a way that pays homage to the Attitude Era.  Green tells IGN that the goal for Camp WWE wasn’t to make a TV-MA rating but that WWE wanted him to create a show that would reach fans that may not like other programming on the network and those that enjoyed South Park or Archer.

Camp WWE itself looks pretty entertaining and funny.  Seeing current WWE Superstars in different characters that they cannot pull off in real life could be very good.  I’m also a huge fan of South Park and other irreverent animated comedies that are adult oriented, so I’m looking forward to this new show as well.

However, Camp WWE is going to be a good thing overall for the network.  As they advertise it on their main shows such as Raw and SmackDown, there is a risk that some parents won’t realize it’s not for kids but only adults.  As a cartoon, will it really be a hit with the adult fans that miss the edgier Attitude Era?  Also, will the new story arcs hurt any of the current WWE Superstars who will have completely different live action personas?

Despite the negative risks, I think Camp WWE could be a fun and different way to enjoy the WWE Network and characters.  As it will not be on the live stream channel on the WWE Network parents will be able to block the show from being watched by their kids as they can restrict access to TV-MA programming.  The biggest key to its success is it will have to tell good stories and not just be shocking for the sake of being shocking.  We will find out if they can pull that off Sunday night after Payback.
