Kevin Owens is the WWE Universal champion. How long will Owens’ title reign last?

Kevin Owens, thanks to the returning Triple H, shocked the WWE Universe on Monday Night Raw last night when he became the WWE Universal champion.

After Triple H returned and pedigreed Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins, Owens secured the victory by pinning Rollins and becoming the new WWE Universal champion.

The question now becomes how long will Owens hold the WWE Universal Championship?

The early answer may be that Owens will carry the title all the way up to Wrestlemania 33.

The months of September and October are generally when WWE tests the waters with various storylines and feuds. Ever since debuting on the main roster one-year ago, Owens has been on the cusp of reaching main event status and challenging for the top title. After Owens wrapped up his feud with Sami Zayn earlier this summer, it had seemed that his ascension to the main-event picture was imminent.

With Owens now in the main-event scene and holding the WWE Universal championship, don’t expect that to change anytime soon. WWE will use the final months of the 2016 calendar year to build up Owens’ championship reign. Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, and Sami Zayn will likely all challenge Owens for the championship over the next few months but come up short.

Then, the Royal Rumble will happen. That is where Owens will begin to make his mark as the WWE Universal champion. At the Royal Rumble, expect Owens to defend his championship against Brock Lesnar. Remember, Lesnar technically never lost his championship considering Rollins pinned Reigns when he cashed in at Wrestlemania 31. While Owens may not secure a clean victory over Lesnar, he will still walk out of the match as the WWE Universal champion. Though, the Royal Rumble will mark the beginning of the end for Owens’ championship reign.

During the Royal Rumble battle royal match, Finn Balor will make his surprise return and win the match. At the conclusion of the Royal Rumble pay-per view, Balor will be standing on the turnbuckle and pointing at the Wrestlemania 33 sign.

One of the greater feuds in NXT over the course of the past year was the feud between Owens and Balor. Owens’ feud with Balor will not only be renewed on the main roster but it will be biggest feud for Wrestlemania 33. The feud will culminate in a match at Wrestlemania 33 and that will be where Owens’ first major title reign ends and Balor reclaims the championship he never lost.
