WWE: Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows Are Not Funny

Multiple comedy-themed segments on WWE RAW once again prove that it’s hard to fill a three-hour show with good wrestling.

The September 5th edition of WWE RAW was hard to watch.

No, I’m not talking about the great in-ring work of Bayley and Seth Rollins or even the nostalgic throwback to 1998 gifted to us by Mick Foley. This is the awful “comedy” segments currently being written for Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows. Some professional wrestlers have a gift when it comes to comedy bits. They can perform fantastic feats of physical prowess in the ring and make us laugh when they speak into a microphone. It is a rare talent and an absolute joy to behold when done properly.

On the flip side, the word “painful” cannot begin to describe the terrible attempt at an Anderson and Gallows comedy routine. It’s more akin to watching your best friend audition for America’s Got Talent and you know good and well they have no talent. They are about to embarrass themselves on national television and there is nothing you can do to stop them. That’s how I feel about watching Anderson and Gallows. These men are simply reading the scripts written for them and I imagine the incessant eye-rolling that must have occurred before the August 29th edition of RAW when they read the first draft for a segment that revolved around the acronym O.L.D. F.A.R.T.

You know who uses the term “old fart”? Old people. This awful segment had Vince’s fingerprints all over it and I bet he thought it was hilarious. I get it, the joke here is that Anderson and Gallows are calling themselves “retirement specialists” ever since the shameful and downright disrespectful way the Dudley Boyz were shown the door. The WWE has been trying to keep the storyline going that Anderson and Gallows are now going to “retire” the New Day which means that the old men gimmick will be attacked from every angle and use as many senior citizen clichés as possible. The bottom line is that it’s not funny. At all.

Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows deserve better than this. These men came into WWE like gangbusters thanks to their association with AJ Styles and the Bullet Club. Would this popular faction be coming to the WWE? Could we see these men take over professional wrestling’s biggest program in the same manner as The Shield? While their association was teased for weeks and we did receive a watered down version known as “The Club”, a potential takeover was put to rest just two weeks later when Styles disbanded the group and was subsequently sent to Smackdown while Anderson and Gallows remained on RAW. Never fear fans, Anderson and Gallows can still make a legitimate run for the tag team titles, right? Not so fast.

The duo has been less than stellar up to this point as a tag team. They lost their final match as part of The Club at Battleground when they were defeated by John Cena, Enzo Amore, and Big Cass. They followed this up with a DQ win (which in the context of a title match is a loss) to the New Day at SummerSlam when Big E returned from his injury and ran interference. The chance to win gold fell through for the two big men yet for some reason, WWE has chosen to keep this feud alive through poorly-written comedy segments instead of actual in-ring competition.

The WWE should be going with who has the hot hand right now and pitting New Day against Amore and Cass who should be your next tag team champions. I love New Day, but their title run has gone stale and Anderson and Gallows should not be the men to end their streak. Unfortunately for us, it appears this may end up being the case.
