Should 2017 Be the Undertaker’s Final Year in WWE?

The Undertaker’s career has spanned more than 25 years. But considering his age and other factors, 2017 should be his final year in the WWE.

The possibility of the Undertaker’s eventual retirement has been a topic for discussion for several years now. While the Undertaker continued to mount up wins at WrestleMania and his work schedule decreased, many thought an eventual loss would have led to retirement. What would be the point of someone nearing the age of 50 to keep wrestling when there’s nothing to gain?

After years of streak-ending teases in classic matches with Shawn Michaels and Triple H, the streak ended at WrestleMania 30. When Brock Lesnar “conquered” what was considered the most impressive winning streak in wrestling history, most of us thought it was over. Right?

The Undertaker had done everything and should have been ready to leave the WWE. And yet, three years later, there’s discussion and rumors about his next opponent. At age 51, the aging Phenom is expected to have another match on the grandest stage in all of professional wrestling. Not only that, but there are rumors that the Deadman might challenge AJ Styles for the WWE World Championship at the Royal Rumble.

While there might be many wrestling fans, myself included, who enjoy seeing the Undertaker return, there has to be an end sooner rather than later. Regardless of what happens and if he does compete in January, the Undertaker should retire from the WWE completely. There are a combination of factors to consider why it’s time for the final bell to toll.

How often have fans seen pictures online of a frail Undertaker in the months leading up to a rumored return? Breaking news: an athlete’s body begins to wear down with age. The fact that the Deadman has been able to compete in longer match the last few years deserves some credit. But his body can only do these matches for so much longer.

More from WWE

The Undertaker should consider taking a page out of Shawn Michaels’ book. The Heartbreak Kid made the choice to walk away from the WWE after WrestleMania XXVI in 2010 – months before he turned 45. He technically could have kept wrestling. Michaels never disappointed fans with the quality of his work. Michaels left the WWE before his in-ring quality became a problem.

In today’s WWE, there has been an influx of great superstars who have brought new life to the product. The roster is very different than when the Undertaker was the big dog in the yard. It’s a younger roster with new main event talents. An aging Deadman isn’t very likely to fit in with this group.

Maybe a championship match against Styles is part of the final sendoff. Some fans might feel a title loss would bury the Phenomenal One. But there would be some nostalgic value of the Phenom holding the belt one final time. It’s likely a championship reign would last only until WrestleMania.
