To open Tuesday’s episode of SmackDown Live, Chris Jericho made a surprise return.

WWE fans last saw Chris Jericho on the post-Payback episode of SmackDown Live, where he was attacked by Kevin Owens and left on a stretcher, gone for an indefinite period of time. This also saw Jericho lose the WWE United States Championship to Owens, who he feuded with during WrestleMania 33 season.

Well, on Tuesday’s episode of SmackDown Live, Jericho made his triumphant and shocking return.

To open the show, Owens and AJ Styles exchanged promos over the United States Championship. Styles lost it to Owens at WWE Battleground. So, as they talked rematch, Jericho’s music went off and brought the crowd to a roar. That only escalated when Y2J actually walked into the venue and made his way to the ring, list in hand.

Afterward, Shane McMahon announced the main event for SmackDown Live — Owens vs. Jericho vs. Styles for the United States Championship.

It’s rare to see surprise returns on WWE TV anymore, given the age of the internet and social media. So this made Tuesday’s return even grander, something that was kept under wraps. Jericho did this with previous returns to WWE.

Now, let’s see how long Jericho’s latest run will be. SummerSlam is around the corner, so it’s possible WWE brought him in for just the one PPV that takes place on Sunday, August 20. However, like the last stint, will it go further and stretch into something long term?
