NWA World Heavyweight Championship

Sting vs. Ric Flair

The build to this match was a thing of beauty, Sting’s promo (and sunglasses) vs. The Man in the $2,000 suit.

Sting is back after rehabilitating a serious knee injury and is seeking his first world championship reign.

Not only do you have one of the greatest rivalries in pro wrestling in Sting vs. Flair, but you have Ole Anderson handcuffed to El Gigante at ringside … Seriously.

Paul Orndorff, Junkyard Dog and The Steiners are all at ringside preventing the Four Horseman from interfering.

Sting and Flair put on a great match, but it just doesn’t meet the high expectations. The writing was on the wall for Sting to win the belt, and this match was simply to put over the Stinger in that classic passing of the torch moment.

There’s some great back and forth action in this one, but everything going on at ringside takes away from it.

This is one of those matches that’s remembered solely because of its one defining moment when Sting rolls Flair up as he goes for the Figure-Four to get the 1-2-3.

It’s a good match and it has one of the more memorable images from the era, so it’s worth the watch.

This show is pretty underwhelming as a whole, it’s worth the watch due to Sting’s win, Vader’s lightning fast debut and some solid tag matches.
