Last Monday, Max Landis, a screenwriter best known for the 2012 film Chronicle, released a free mini-mockumentary on YouTube which followed the career of Triple H, called “Wrestling Isn’t Wrestling.”
More from Daily DDT
The mockumentary started when Triple H was known as Hunter Hearst Helmsley, and carried through the beginnings of his friendship with Shawn Michaels, to the formation of DX, to Michaels’ first exit from WWE, to the formation of Evolution, Michaels’ return, the fall of Evolution, the reformation of DX, his and Michaels’ combined 0-4 record against The Undertaker from WrestleMania 25-28, and finally, Triple H’s rivalry with Daniel Bryan.
All the roles of wrestlers are played by women, and wrestlers depicted include Triple H, Michaels, Bryan, John Cena, Ric Flair, Randy Orton, and Batista. Of course, one wrestler is played by a man, that being Chyna.
It’s a very funny mockumentary, and it has been very well received by wrestling and non-wrestling fans, alike. However, there are conflicting reports about WWE’s feelings on the film.
Bryan Alvarez of the Wrestling Observer reported that talent were told not to talk about the mockumentary on social media, despite the fact that many of the talent loved it. He also reported that the office was not happy at all.
However, Landis, who is friends with many people in WWE, tweeted at Alvarez that his report is incorrect. His first tweet can be found here (NSFW). Him and Alvarez would then respond to each other a few times, with Landis confirming that talent were told not to share on social media, but for a different reason than Alvarez initially reported.
WWE is a strange place, where anything is possible, but it’s hard to believe that they would be against this video. It could be seen as depicting Triple H in a negative light, but Landis at the beginning states that Triple H is probably his favorite wrestler.
I’m going to buy what Landis is saying, especially since “Wrestling Isn’t Wrestling” is pure gold. If you haven’t seen it yet, just do it:
