Sunday, August 23 will feature the WWE SummerSlam pay-per-view from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. The show will feature a rematch from WrestleMania 30 and a title for title match that is sure to spark some buzz.

The build for the show began at last month’s WWE Battleground PPV, when The Undertaker cost Brock Lesnar a chance at the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Seth Rollins. They’ve since been feuding on Raw with a brawl and Undertaker delivering a now trademark low blow.

Undertaker and Lesnar will head into SummerSlam main-eventing the show. Can ‘Taker get his revenge for Lesnar ending the streak? Can Lesnar continue to be the thorn in the Phenom’s side?

There’s also the title for title match, which features Rollins defending his WWE World Heavyweight Championship while John Cena defends his WWE United States Championship. The winner will walk out both belts. Will Cena make it 16 reigns or can Rollins continue his momentum? Could Sheamus attempt a cash-in?

Another key match on the card is Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns vs. Bray Wyatt and Luke Harper. It pits the two families against each other that battled at WWE Elimination Chamber 2014 (four of the six). Which family reigns supreme?

Randy Orton vs Sheamus

Result: Sheamus def. Orton by pinfall (Brogue Kick)

Rating: 2.75 stars out of 5 stars

Orton trues to go for the RKO right away, but Sheamus rolls out of the ring. Sheamus grabs a mic on the outside and tells the Brooklyn crowd that they look stupid and tells everyone to respect the hawk. Orton up-ends Sheamus on the announce table and rolls Sheamus back into the ring.
Sheamus gets control in the ring and manages to drop a knee off the top rope to Orton for a two count. Sheamus manages to hit consecutive backbreakers on Orton while constantly taunting the Viper. The two trade blows but Sheamus manages to get an elbow into the mouth of Orton. Randy manages to get some momentum and launches Sheamus over the top rope to the floor with a t-bone suplex.

Orton begins to work over Sheamus in the corner and messes up his signature mohawk. The Irishman fights out and Orton ends up busted open. Sheamus locks Orton in a cloverleaf submission, but he reaches the ropes. Sheamus goes for a Brogue Kick but misses and ends up getting powerslammed by Orton. The Viper also hits a hangman’s DDT off of the top rope instead of the middle one.

Orton sets up for the RKO but Sheamus rolls out to the apron,. Sheamus gets some control back and goes for a battering ram over the rope but Orton catches him with an RKO! Before Orton can pin though Sheamus rolls to the outside.. Orton sets up Sheamus for a Punt Kick, but misses and Sheamus is able to hit him with White Noise and both men are down.

Sheamus goes for a Brogue Kick, but misses. Orton attempts to hit an RKO, but Sheamus pushes him away and hits two straight Brogue Kicks and picks up the victory.

Evan’s Note: A decent match with some good spots, such as the top rope hangman’s DDT and the double Brogue Kick, but it was nothing completely spectacular. A decent opener to the biggest event of the summer.

Fatal 4-Way Match for the WWE Tag Team Championship

PrimeTime Players (c) vs Los Matadores w/ El Torito vs Lucha Dragons vs New Day

Result: New Day wins to become WWE Tag Team Champions

Rating: 3.25 out of 5 stars

New Day comes out first to tell New York that the city know nothing about hip hop. They then sing a song called “Let’s Hear It For New Day.” The participants for New Day are Kofi and Big E. Big E and Titus start the match. Kofi tags in off Titus, and tries to pin themselves in order to pin themselves but Titus breaks up the pin. Sin Cara tags Big E in order to get one of the New Day members out of the match.
Big E ends up in the ring with Kalisto and he slaps the luchador across the face. Kalisto comes back with a springboard kick and Darren Young tags in to go against Kalisto, who does some serious flips to the appeasement of the Brooklyn crowd. Big E ends up in the ring with Young and hits a huge splash onto Darren on the apron.

Quick tags dominate the match as a lot of teams focus on Darren Young. Once New Day are in they do their patented stomps and quick tags. Young is bleeding from his mouth as New Day continues to dominate the match. Both Kofi and Young are down, and Young gets the hot tag to Titus. O’Neil takes out the entire match, including the two teams not currently legal in the ring. He clears the entire ring, tossing the luchadors like throw pillows. Fernando manages to tag in and gets a two count on a cross body on Titus.

Fernando goes for a top rope move but gets pushed off by Woods. When El Torito goes after Woods he gets destroyed with a facebuster by Woods. Big E spears Young through the ropes. Sin Cara and Kalisto hit a superplex with O’Neil doing a powerbomb as well. Kofi manages to sneak in a tag on Titus in the corner. Titus hits a Clash of the Titus on Fernando, and Kofi kicks Titus. Big E pushes Titus out of the ring and Kofi pins Fernando for the win!

New, Day Rocks!

Evan’s Note: An entertaining match that had a lot of cool spots. The Big E spear through the ropes will never fail to be impressive. It’s great that New Day can continue to be promoted as the tag champs and annoy the entire division each week. A really good match to get SummerSlam off to a really hot start.

Next: Rusev vs. Dolph Ziggler

wwe.com

Dolph Ziggler w/ Lana vs Rusev w/ Summer Rae

Result: Double Count-out

Rating: 2.75 stars out of 5 stars

Lana is out in Dolph Ziggler wear instead of her usual business attire. The match starts with a staredown and Ziggler gets an initial burst with a gorgeous dropkick. After that burst though, Rusev firmly takes control. He continues to wrench on the midsection of Ziggler, and then hits a huge swinging sidewalk slam for a close two count.

Rusev goes for a gorilla press slam but Ziggler counters it into a big DDT. Ziggler gets another burst, hitting a neckbreaker and a jumping clothesline. Rusev hits a spinning heel kick to Ziggler and then goes to the top rope, where he is grabbed by Ziggler for a top rope facebuster. Rusev hits a frontflip senton to Ziggler from a standing position, which was just amazing. Rusev attempts his trademark kick but misses twice, and Dolph jumps onto Rusev with a sleeper hold.

Ziggler hits a Fameasser on Rusev and only gets a two count. Rusev manages to hit his kick and sets up for the Accolade. Rusev locks in the Accolade, and Lana cheers on Ziggler. Summer comes over and tries to slap Lana, who counters and slaps her herself. This distracts Rusev enough to break the Accolade and go to the outside. Rusev yells at Lana and Summer comes from behind and attacks her. Dolph comes out and hits a superkick to Rusev and knocks him down. The ref is at a count of 8 and Ziggler tries to make it in the ring in time, but just misses and it ends in a count-out.

Ziggler and Rusev continue to brawl in the ring and Summer comes in to attack mercilessly. Lana jumps on Summer and they fight it out for a bit, but are broken up by their beaus.

Evan’s Note: This was a well contested match, but the ending really took away from it. It was great to see these two get at each other as it added some more heat to the feud, but I don’t know how this feud will really continue. The match was good, but the ending really was not.

Next: Neville and Amell vs. Stardust and Barrett

wwe.com

Stephen Amell & Neville vs King Barrett & Stardust

Result: Amell & Neville def. Barrett & Stardust by pinfall (Red Arrow)

Rating: 3 stars out of 5 stars

Amell doesn’t wear his Arrow hood in the ring which is super disappointing. Barrett and Neville start the match off and Neville is in control with some of his usual flips and such. Stardust tags in and says he wants Amell, not Neville. Neville tags Amell in Stardust shoves Amell down. Amell kicks Stardust down which surprises him. Amell actually takes control of the match and does an archer taunt towards the Prince of Dark matter. Barrett gets tagged in against Amell, and Barrett hits the tv star with a hige kick.

Stardust and Barrett wear down on Amell in the corner. Amell gets sent to the outside where Stardust hits some more shots against the actor. Amell ends up hitting an enziguri and both men are down. Amell gets the hot tag to Neville who takes out both of the heels. He hits Neville with a huge flipping splash and then sends Barrett to the outside with Stardust. Amell hits a cross body off the top rope and takes out both men. Amell throws Barrett back in the ring who gets hit with a Red Arrow from Neville for the victory.

Evan’s Note: This match gets a higher grade than two of the other bouts because of it’s pure entertainment value. Instead of being protected and saved for the end of the match, Amell was the bulk of the in-ring action. He looked good in the ring, and the match was just fun all over. Plus Neville seemed to hit a gear no one else on the roster can; his speed is actually blinding. Tons of fun from this match.

Triple Threat Match for the Intercontinental Championship

Ryback (c) vs Big Show vs The Miz

Result: Ryback retains by pinfall (KO Punch to Miz)

Rating: 2.5 stars out of 5 stars

Miz sneaks out of the ring to start the match, and Big Show and Ryback fight it out. Ryback and Miz attempt to double suplex Big Show, but he suplexes both of them at once. Big Show goes to the second rope and hits a senton off the top and Miz covers Ryback for a two count. Ryback also hits a top rope splash onto Miz, and when he gets up Big Show chokeslams Ryback directly onto Miz.

Big Show gets ready for a KO punch, but Ryback ducks and hits a spinebuster. Ryback hits a Shellshock on Big Show, and Miz hits a Skull Crushing Finale. Miz goes back and forth pinning each big guy, but can;t get a count on any of them. Ryback lifts Miz up for a Shellshock but gets KO Punched by Big Show. Miz also gets hit with a KO Punch, and then Ryback dumped Big Show to the outside and pinned Miz for the victory.

Evan’s Note: This match worked as a great pallet cleanser if nothing else. Ryback retained which was the correct choice, but the match itself was nothing special. Hopefully this signals the end of this feud so Ryback can move on to another challenger.

Next: Family vs. Family

wwe.com

Wyatt Family (Bray Wyatt & Luke Harper) vs Roman Reigns & Dean Ambrose

Result: Reigns & Ambrose def. Wyatts by pinfall (Spear)

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5 stars

Ambrose starts out against Harper, who is quickly dumped to the outside. Ambrose hits a suicide dive to Harper on the outside. Reigns tosses Wyatt over the barricade, and Ambrose ends up running across all three announce tables and hits a diving elbow to Wyatt. Back in the ring, the former Shield members are in control until Wyatt comes back in. Harper ends up hitting a suicide dive to Reigns on the outside after a slam onto the apron. Ambrose goes for a suicide dive but is stopped and then hit with a big boot on the rebound.

After the hectic opening, the Wyatts are in control with a massive suplex to Ambrose by Wyatt. Harper chops Ambrose so hard that his shirt rips open. Wyatt hits a hangman DDT to the arena floor with his feet on the second rope. Reigns is still not up on the apron to partner with Ambrose, leaving Dean to defend for himself in the ring. Ambrose is completely destroyed in the ring, but manages to catch Wyatt with a rebound clothesline. Reigns is finally in the corner and gets the hot tag.

Reigns goes blow for blow with Harper in the ring and goes gets caught with a massive powerbomb after a distraction by Wyatt. Wyatt gets tagged in and gets hit with a Superman Punch. Reigns then hit’s Harper with one as well and tags Ambrose in. The two hit the Doomsday Device on Wyatt, but the pin is broken up by Harper. Harper ends up eating an assisted powerbomb from the former Shield members.

Wyatt was playing possum the whole time and tries to get Dean with Sister Abigail. Ambrose manages to hit Dirty Deeds on Wyatt instead and Reigns gets ready for a Spear. He connects with the Spear to get the win over the Wyatts at SummerSlam.

Evan’s Note: The match that a lot of people suspected would have a heel turn in it turned out to have none, just a ton of action. The opening sequence of the match at ringside was well done and had a lot of cool spots. The story of Reigns being out of it for so long make Ambrose look as resilient as ever, and the Wyatts looked good here too. Another winner of a match on the SummerSlam card.

Next: Seth Rollins vs. John Cena

wwe.com

Winner-Take-All Match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship & United States Championship

Seth Rollins (WWE Champ) vs John Cena (US Champ)

Result: Rollins def. Cena by pinfall to become double champion (Pedigree)

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5 stars

The match starts with duelling “Let’s Go Cena” and “Cena Sucks” chants from the Brooklyn crowd. Rollins ends up hitting Cena with a hip toss and a dropkick, and then mocks his U Can’t See Me taunt. The amount of negative chants towards Cena seems to be getting to him, and Rollins is in control hitting a series of suicide dives followed by a diving senton over the top. Rollins hits a slingblade in the ring but only gets a two count.

Cena grabs Rollins as he dives off the top rope and goes for a five knuckle shuffle, but gets kicked away by Rollins. Rollins misses a pedigree, and then Cena manages to (barely0 connect with a springboard stunner. Rollins hits a running moonsault to Cena for a two count as well. Rollins sets Cena up on the top rope, forces him into a tree of woe and hits a double foot stomp on him for another two count.

Rollins is firmly in control of Cena, but John Cena catches Rollins with an AA out of instinct! He makes the cover and gets only a two count. Cena then gets a little momentum hitting an electric chair facebuster for another two. Speaking of facebusters, Cena has been protecting his nose all match, holding his hands up to his face to protect his surgically repaired nose. Cena manages to hit a top rope leg drop and only gets a two count, but they’re getting progressively closer and closer.

Cena goes for a super AA off the second rope but Rollins manages to counter it into a corner powerbomb. Rollins goes up to the top rope and hits a Guerrero like frog splash. When he goes for the pin Cena rolls through and tries to hit the AA. Rollins flips out of it, and manages to pick up Cena for an AA of his own. He hits it on the US champ and gets a two count plus a “This is Awesome” chant from the crowd.

Rollins goes to the top rope for the Phoenix Splash but Cena moves. Cena ends up catching Rollins with an STF. Rollins gets out of it and goes for a Pedigree, but misses and after reversing each other’s moves Cena ends up in a Figure Four Leg Lock as an homage to Ric Flair. Rollins manages to roll him over and reverse the pressure, but Cena eventually reaches the ropes.

Cena on one leg manages to make it to the top rope but he gets caught by Rollins with a Superplex that he rolls into a Falcon Arrow. Cena manages to kick out at 2 and 9/10. Rollins goes up top and attempts another Phoenix Splash. Cena has Rollins up for an AA but knocks the ref down. Cena hits the AA but has no ref to make the count.

Cena tries to get Rollins up despite there being no ref, and Rollins hits the same move to Cena that broke his knee before. Jon Stewart comes out from the back and has a steel chair, and he doesn’t know who to hit, but he hits Cena! Rollins hits the Pedigree on the chair, and gets the three count! Rollins is both WWE World Heavyweight Champion and US Champion!

Evan’s Note: That was an incredibly fought match. Both Cena and Rollins pulled out so many moves from their arsenal and had amazingly crisp reversals and counters. The addition of Stewart initially made me groan, but his heel turn and alignment with Rollins by hitting Cena with the chair was a big swerve. We thought there would be a heel turn tonight and we were correct: it was Stewart! An amazing match that continues the series of excellence this weekend.

3-Team Divas Elimination Tag Match

Team PCB (Paige, Charlottes & Becky Lynch) vs Team B.A.D. (Naomi, Sasha Banks & Tamina) vs Team Bella (Alicia Fox, Nikki & Brie Bella)

Result: Brie eliminates Tamina (Team B.A.D. out); Becky eliminates Nikki (Team Bella out)

Winners: Team PCB (Paige Becky Lynch & Charlotte)

Rating: 3.0 stars out of 5 stars

Go to work on Becky Lynch in the corner. Naomi hits a big leg drop to Lynch and Banks and Tamina continue the attack as well, knocking Lynch to the outside. Charlotte runs around the outside and hits Tamina with a spear, but then the other members of Team B.A.D. do diving sentons to the group on the outside. The Bella Twins hit twin suicide dives as well. Fox and Paige do battle on top of the turnbuckle and then Paige hits a senton to the rest of the match on the apron.

Brie tags herself in by tagging Lynch, and Brie hits a facebuster which eliminates Tamina and Team B.A.D. Early. Paige and Nikki end up in the ring together and Paige takes control of the Divas champ with a fallaway slam and a series of knees. Paige went for a baseball slide but got caught, and hit with a huge Alabama Slam onto the arena floor. Paige manages to get back in at the count of 9.

The Bella twins continue to tag in and out working over Paige. Brie hits the kicks made famous by her husband Daniel Bryan but almost gets caught with a roll-up. Fox comes in and hits her flawless northern lights suplex. The Bellas continue to mock Paige while she tries to reach to her corner for the tag. Paige manages to fight off the members of Team Bella with some forearms and knees, and hits the hot tag to Charlotte. Flair’s daughter destroys Team Bella and nails Alicia Fox with a spear. She locks in the Figure Eight but it’s broken up by Nikki Bella. Paige spears Nikki to the outside, and Alicia and Charlotte hit each other with big boots.

Both girls get hot tags to Nikki and Becky respectively, who go to work in the ring. Brie goes for a big kick but misses. Becky Lynch catches Brie with a pumphandle slam for the victory.

Evan’s Note: A good well worked match by the Divas division, but it had some strange booking decisions. Knocking out Team B.A.D. so early was strange, plus the finish of the match seemed to come out of nowhere. The actual match action was good though with some great dives and spots like the Alabama Slam on the arena floor. Another good match on the SummerSlam card.

Next: Kevin Owens vs. Cesaro

WWE.com

Kevin Owens vs Cesaro

Result: Owens def. Cesaro by pinfall (Pop-Up Powerbomb)

Rating: 4.0 stars out of 5

The match almost immediately goes to the outside and Owens hits a senton over the top rope. He starts running his mouth but while he is distracted Cesaro hits a corkscrew dive onto Owens on the outside. Inside the ring Cesaro hits a cross body and a double foot stomp onto Owens. Owens hits a cannonball on the outside and takes control of the match in the ring.

Owens tries to wear down the Swiss Superman, and as Cesaro starts to fight back Owens nails a spinning neckbreaker. Owens hits a front flip leg drop onto Cesaro’s head but only gets a two count. Owens keeps shoving Cesaro and tells him to stay down, but once he slaps Cesaro the Swiss fighter comes back with a flurry of slaps and punches. Owens goes out to the apron to catch his breath tries to go to the top rope. Cesaro grabs him up there for a huge gutwrench suplex off the top for a two count.

Cesaro attempts the Neutralizer, but when he can’t get him up he just lays into Owens with uppercuts. He tries again but gets a backdrop instead. Owens manages to leap off the second rope for a tornado DDT out of nowhere, which nets him a two count of his own. Owens goes for a moonsault but Cesaro manages to avoid it. Cesaro starts trying his run of corner uppercuts, but Owens catches Cesaro with a massive superkick.

After the close count Owens goes for the Pop-Up Powerbomb and instead gets a springboard uppercut from Cesaro. Cesaro hits a running uppercut outside the ring and then rolls Owens back into the ring and hits him with ten swings with the giant swing. Cesaro locks in his partner Tyson Kidd’s signature Sharpshooter. KO manages to get a hand to the ropes just in time.

Both men go to the top rope and Owens goes for his top rope hook superplex, and after knocking Cesaro onto the rope, manages to hit it. KO whips Cesaro into the ropes for a Pop-Up Powerbomb and connects. KO covers Cesaro for the 3 count.

Evan’s Note: This match was simply about who was the better wrestler. Both men put on a solid clinic of wrestling and pulled out tons of moves from their repertoire. The feeling of this card (and really, this whole weekend) has been people going out and saying “top that.” This match was another one that was just a great battle between two competitors.

Next: Brock Lesnar vs. The Undertaker

“The Match Too Big For WrestleMania”

Brock Lesnar vs The Undertaker

Results: Undertaker def. Lesnar by knock-out (Hell’s Gate)

Rating: 4.75 stars out of 5 stars

Lesnar didn’t even wait for Undertaker to take his leather coat off before laying into him with knees and strikes. Undertaker manages to fight back and clothesline Lesnar to the outside of the ring. Once Lesnar manages to get into the ring the bell officially rings. Taker gets an upper hand against Lesnar and goes for the Old School. Lesnar pulls Taker down and goes for an F5 but the Deadman gets out of it. He has Lesnar in a chokeslam but Lesnar again manages to get out and start hitting Taker with suplexes.

Taker hits the Snake Eyes on Lesnar and then connects with the big boot. Lesnar is busted open again as Undertaker runs Lesnar into the apron and barricade. Undertaker lines up Lesnar on the apron and drops the leg onto Brock. The Brooklyn crowd chants “You Still Got It” as Undertaker begins picking apart Lesnar with strikes. Taker has Lesnar up for a chokeslam but he moves and instead gets a german suplex on the Deadman.

Brock ends up hitting three germans in a row and Undertaker rolls out of the ring to the outside. Lesnar starts taking apart the French announce table but Taker catches Lesnar with an elbow. Taker has Lesnar set up for a Last Ride, but Lesnar turns it into an F5 and he puts Undertaker right through the table.

Taker manages to make it into the ring at the count of 9. Lesnar’s face is a crimson mask as he stalks Undertaker and Lesnar tells him that he will kill him. Taker is completely drained after the F5 through the table. Undertaker tells Lesnar that he’ll have to kill him to stop him and destroys Brock with a chokeslam. Undertaker then hits a Tombstone Piledriver and gets a close 2 count. Both men are down and Lesnar gets up laughing, and Taker gets up laughing right back at him. They begin trading blows while still seated.

Eventually Brock ends up in the corner with a Kimura Lock on Taker. The Deadman survives the hold and musters up the energy to hit a Last Ride to Brock for a two count. Lesnar recovers first and hoists Undertaker for an F5. He makes the cover and gets the 2.9 count. Lesnar then connects with a third F5, and unlike Wrestlemania Taker manages to kick out again! Taker played possum on Lesnar again and managed to get Lesnar trapped in a Hell’s Gate. Lesnar struggles at first but rolls Taker into a Kimura Lock.

Someone calls for the bell while Lesnar has Undertaker in a Kimura. Lesnar lets go of the Kimura and Heyman begins celebrating because he swears he saw Taker tap out. Charles Robinson starts yelling at ringside because he never called for the bell. Undertaker manages to hit Lesnar with a low blow while Robinson wasn’t looking. He then locked Lesnar into a Hell’s Gate and lock it in very tight. He starts screaming at Lesnar to tap and Lesnar flips off the Deadman. As he’s giving Undertaker the middle finger, Brock fades and the ref calls for the bell. Undertaker has made the Beast tap.

On replay, we see that the timekeeper and Heyman were correct: Undertaker tapped where Robinson couldn’t see it. That made the real winner of the match Brock Lesnar, and Lesnar and Heyman are livid. Heyman grabs a mic and announces Brock Lesnar as the real winner of the match.

Evan’s Note: Wow, what a match. The finish was interesting and really established how Undertaker was willing to do anything, even cheat, in order to win the match. Having the finish be a little dusty does take away from the match quality; however, the match itself was an instant classic and a great brawl that had stellar striking, fantastic signature moves, some trips to suplex city, and more than it’s fair share of memorable moments. Undertaker is the official winner, Lesnar is the real winner, and the fans are all definite winners after that match.

Final Thoughts

Top to bottom, that was easily the best card since Wrestlemania. When combined with NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn yesterday, this was one of the best weekends for WWE wrestling or wrestling in general in as long as I can remember. Every competitor on the roster brought it from opening bell to closing moments.

The two main events were two instant classics. Rollins and Cena was a clinic of wrestling skill that (even though it had a strange finish) did have a fantastic result that not many people saw coming. Rollins having both titles will be interesting and will make a ton of people tune in to RAW.

Undertaker and Lesnar just had chapter two of what is sure to be a longer story. The finish to the match was the only thing took away from the match as it was another dusty finish. Aside from that it had so many instant classic moments, like the laughing while sitting on the mat and the F5 through the table that it will still hold up to the test of time.

Owens and Cesaro was a fantastic pure wrestling match between two indy darlings. The New Day are back on top as one of the best heel tag teams of the last 5 years. The Divas elimination style match had a little bit of interesting booking but was still a well done Divas match. Wyatts and the Shield boys had an entertaining tussle. Stephen Amell did a massive dive and had one of the best celebrity matches of all time.

Overall, WWE put on two fantastic cards this weekend and Summerslam definitely lived up to the hype.

Did you enjoy Summerslam? What was your favorite match? Are you okay with how Undertaker-Lesnar ended? Let us know in the comments below, and feel free to keep the conversation going with me on twitter at @E_Gomes.
