What were our top 5 moments of the week in WWE?

More from WWE

There’s so much content coming out of WWE every single week and we scour everything that’s produced to bring you the best moments in one handy list.

We’re another week closer to WWE Night of Champions and it’s been another busy week for everyone involved. From the top of the card to the bottom, we’ve seen everything from feuds building and major announcements to in-ring debuts and more Legends returning.

ALSO ON DAILY DDT: WWE Night of Champions: 10 Best Matches

It’s only 7 days until we see every title in WWE defended at Night of Champions. It feels like a long week until we get to the event and there’s a lot that needs to be sorted to finalize the match card.

There’s a few things that didn’t quite make the list but are worthy of pointing out:

  • Randy Orton is gone from WWE for a while, he was written off tv after an attack by the Wyatt Family.
  • WWE has officially announced the signing of Japanese star Kana, who will be known as Asuka in NXT.
  • Also on the signing front, Indie star Biff Busick has reportedly signed to NXT.
  • The Los Matadores team appears to be over, after they turned on each other after a match on Raw.
  • Lana broke her wrist whilst warming up before a house show, that somewhat throws a spanner in the works for the Dolph Ziggler/Lana vs Rusev/Summer Rae feud.

5. Gargano and Ciampa Hit the Ring

After making an appearance in a backstage segment with William Regal and Tyler Breeze the previous week, we finally saw the in-ring debuts of Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa on NXT TV.

Two of the most well know faces on the indie circuit around the world, the pair have been on the WWE radar for a while and this was the first chance for a lot of the WWE fans to see them perform. The match took place as part of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic on NXT with Tyler Breeze and Bull Dempsey as the opponents. It finished with a somewhat surprising result, as Gargano and Ciampa won to advance to the second round.

It’s so good to see talents who are not contracted to the company getting a chance to impress. You only have to look at the popularity of Leva “Blue Pants” Bates on NXT to see how bringing people in as part-time acts, whilst allowing them still perform on the indies, can benefit both the company and the talent.  This could be the future of how contracts will work for NXT talent in the years going forward.

Bringing in Gargano and Ciampa on this basis (they also took part on the most recent NXT tapings) gives them a chance to get over with the crowd, whilst giving the company the chance to have a look at them both in the ring. I hope that both men are eventually signed to full-time contracts and go on to have massively successful careers in WWE.

4. The Wyatts Scare Everyone Away?

In the last few weeks we’ve seen the escalating feud between the Wyatt Family, the trio of Bray Wyatt, Luke Harper and Braun Strowman, and Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose. A 6 man tag match was announced for Night of Champions, but who would be the third man to team with the former Shield members ?

We’ve had a couple of hints this week, with both Randy Orton and Jimmy Uso looking like they could be the partner to fill the gap in team Reigns/Ambrose. It’s not ended well for either man. Orton was destroyed by the Wyatt trio on Raw, after the win in his latest match with Sheamus, a beat down that also serves to get Randy off tv for a while. On SmackDown we saw the unfortunate Jimmy Uso, cousin to Reigns, get the gig as the third team member for the match with the New Day. That ended with Jimmy in the grips of Strowman on the ramp, another candidate out of the question perhaps.

A lot of credit must go to the Wyatts for making this such a good story to get involved in. Having them take out anyone who looks likely to become a partner to the former Shield team mates keeps the interest in the feud, whilst pushing Strowman as a monster to compliment the talents of Wyatt and Harper.

Who will be the man to fill the void at Night of Champions? There’s been the rumor that it could be a call up for NXT’s Baron Corbin, whilst I’d love to see that it doesn’t really fit with his “Lone Wolf” character.

One thing that stood out during this week was the amped up talk of needing a family member to team with Reigns and Ambrose. Playing up the fact that Reigns is related to Uso also draws you to remember that The Rock is also related to Roman, how good would that be to see The Great One as the third man?

3. Sting Pushes Seth Rollins to the Limit

A few weeks ago we saw Sting return to WWE. He was automatically placed into the spot of challenger to WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins. How did he do that? He stole Seth’s statue.

This week on Raw we saw the rest of that story play out. Seth started the show with another in-ring promo, talking about how great he is again and how that statue should be in the office of the Authority to remind them how great he is. Sting eventually appears on the big screen, along with the statue, basically telling Rollins that if he wants the statue he needs to come and get it. From there they basically went back and forth all night until we finally saw the statue meet its end.

Seth was far from happy but he needs to focus a bit more on the upcoming challenges he faces. A WWE World Heavyweight Championship match with Sting, coupled with the mandatory defense of his United States Championship against former champion John Cena are both coming in the same night. Add to that the possibility that if he retains against Sting there’s still the chance of a Money in the Bank cash in from briefcase holder, Sheamus. There’s a lot that Seth needs to think about in the next seven days.

This was a great way to further the Sting vs Rollins feud, whilst throwing in the seeds of a Seth vs Triple H match in the future. Many people will only know Sting from his WCW days, the TNA chapter of his career will have been missed by a lot of the audience, this is the perfect way to get him over with the crowd.

2. The Women hit the main event in NXT.

Whilst the Divas Revolution seemed to have stalled quite a bit on the main roster the Women’s Division in NXT goes from strength to strength. This week on NXT TV we saw the announcement of the main event of the next TakeOver, Women’s Champion Bayley will face Sasha Banks in a 30 minute Iron Man match.

The women’s division in NXT has always been treated as highly as the men’s, but finally now we see a women’s match main event one of the brands biggest events. That’s how you pinpoint a revolution! The fact that the match pits two of the best the company has produced, in such an important position, shows that Triple H really does know what’s best for business, can you ever imagine a similar match in the same spot on a main roster pay per view?

Over on the main roster we’ve seen one of the participants in that match, Sasha Banks, embroiled in a series of matches with Paige. A couple of great matches between the pair, plus a full on brawl between their accompanying team mates on SmackDown, has pushed the Divas Revolution a bit further down the road.

Throw into the mix the fact that The Authority actually granted Charlotte her match against Nikki Bella for the Divas Title on next weeks Raw and this Revolution is getting back to where it should always have been. Will Nikki lose the belt before she breaks the record, held by AJ Lee, for longest reigning Divas Champion?

1. Raw Totally Reeks of Awesomeness!

We all knew that Edge and Christian were in town for the recording of Stone Colds podcast on Monday night. Some of us hoped that they’d show up on Raw. None of us knew how epic the moment would be when they did!

What started out as a segment with Seth Rollins and The New Day talking about teaming up in the main event quickly turned into a massive mark out moment for many fans. Edge and Christian appeared in the shot, initially to confront Rollins about the time late last year he threatened to break Edge’s neck. That lead to Xavier Woods playing his trombone and trying to get a New Day chant going, until Christian whipped out his kazoo and got Edge to join him in a “New Day Sucks” chant instead. Then the best bit happened, as the Dudley Boyz are here too!

After announcing that the Prime Time Players would face New Day on the next Raw, followed by the winners of that match facing the Dudleys at Night of Champions for the tag belts, the Dudley Boyz teamed with Edge and Christian for a rousing chorus of “Get the Tables” to the New Days theme.

Anyone who watched the WWF/WWE during the Attitude Era will know how amazing it was to see both Edge and Christian and The Dudley Boyz on-screen together. This brought back so many great memories, ladder matches, table matches, tlc matches, oh my these guys were amazing together back in the day! You can only hope that these appearances will spur the current tag team division on to try to match the levels that both of these legendary teams reached back in their heyday.

The only thing missing was a certain Matt and Jeff Hardy, if you believe rumors we could see them back sooner rather than later!
