What happened when new NXT Women’s Champion Bayley returned to Full Sail University in tonight’s episode of WWE NXT?

This week’s WWE NXT broadcast is sure to have lots of action as NXT gets ready for TakeOver on October 7th. The show will be titled NXT TakeOver: Respect, as HHH mentioned on twitter:

There is still lots of card to be filled out for the event, so tonight’s episode will give more of an idea of what the card will look like.

Bayley was announced to have her first match back in WWE NXT after winning the Women’s Championship in a classic match against Sasha Banks at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn. Who will the new champion’s opponent be tonight and at the next TakeOver?

The Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic continues on tonight’s broadcast as well. All of the first round matchups have occurred either on weekly TV or house shows. Who will move past the next round and cement themselves as the team to beat in the tournament?

Tyler Breeze and Bull Dempsey definitely won’t be winning it as they crumbled as a team last week. After some miscommunication leading to a loss to Johnny Gargano and Tomasso Ciampa, Breeze beat up Dempsey and blamed him for the loss. Will the creator of Bull-Fit have a response to Breeze this week?

Finally, will Apollo Crews continue his rise to the top of WWE NXT after his debut in NXT? He has looked impressive in his first few bouts and will look to continue his great run so far. Will he make an appearance tonight?

Tyler Breeze/Adam Rose/Bull Dempsey segment

We get a recap of Ciampa and Gargano meeting Dempsey and Breeze last week followed by Breeze destroying Dempsey in the ring. Adam Rose comes out with a mic and says that the WWE Universe took a big poop on the Adam Rose party, and he says he’s going to return the favor on the NXT crowd. He says there is no more fun allowed.

Bull Dempsey makes his way out as well. Dempsey says what he’s going to do to Breeze right now is no accident. Breeze says the only accident he remembers from last week was the two of them being paired together, and calls Dempsey’s berth an accident too. Bull tells Rose to give over the match so he can whoop Breeze, and Rose says no and calls Dempsey tubby before slapping him. Dempsey takes out Rose and forces him from the ring.

Breeze attacks Dempsey and when Dempsey begins to fight back, Tyler ducks out of the ring to escape.

Evan’s Note: If you ever want to get a pop as an opponent of Breeze, just do his corner taunt and the crowd will go nuts. This match seems like a given for TakeOver now.

Adam Rose’s new character doesn’t do a lot for me, but I look forward to him having a more heelish gimmick to run with.

Corbin/Rhyno vs Gargano/Ciampa is announced for later tonight, plus Bayley’s emotional return in her first match later tonight.

Tyler Breeze is shown backstage taking a selfie and answering Dempsey’s challenge for a match and says he is on, so that match is official for next week.

Tyle Dillinger vs. Danny Burch

Result: Tye Dillinger defeats Danny Burch via pinfall.

Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars

Chain wrestling starts the match with Dillinger getting Burch into a modified abdominal stretch. Dillinger avoids a backdrop from Burch and cartwheels, coming up celebrating and saying “ten!” Burch mocks the taunt after knocking Dillinger down, but Dillinger fights out and gets some offence in. Dillinger takes his kneepad off and hits Burch with essentially a sitting GTS for the win.

Evan’s Note: A really good match for Dillinger even if it was fairly short. Those are the time constraints for NXT television though. Dillinger works his gimmick well and I’m a fan of his finisher. Hopefully a meaningful feud is in his future, either as a face or a heel.

Corbin/Rhyno Interview

The pair are asked if they’re worried about being upset by Gargano and Ciampa tonight. Rhyno says he’s more worried about what the two of them will do to Gargano and Ciampa. Corbin says he doesn’t care where they came from, and that him and Rhyno will win the tournament.

The new Asuka vignette is aired. She looks pretty intimidating, and I really like the mask from the vignette. I hope it’s something that can be worked into her gimmick.

Apollo Crews vs. Solomon Crowe

Result: Apollo Crews defeats Solomon Crowe via pinfall (Apollo Combo).

Rating: 2.7 out of 5 stars

Crews and Crowe shake hands to start the match, but after some chain wrestling Crews goes for another hand shake. Crowe kicks his hand away and says that it’s his ring. Crews begins controlling the match, hitting a deadlift suplex to Crowe, picking him up from the mat. Crews goes for a baseball slide to Crowe on the outside, but Solomon puts the ring apron over Crews and lays into him with strikes.

Crowe now is fully in control, grounding Crews with a chokehold and clothesline. Crews gets momentum back after a corner boot. He hits a standing enziguri and a massive clothesline followed by the Apollo Combo of the gorilla press slam and a standing moonsault. He covers Crowe for the 3 count.

Evan’s Note: Crews has so much athleticism it’s actually kind of scary. Hopefully at the next TakeOver he can have a longer matchup that showcases his abilities better. Crowe seems to be a little lost in the shuffle, as he has been a tweener the last few weeks between face and heel. Let’s hope that he can find direction soon or he may go the way of CJ Parker and be doomed to staying in NXT for his whole WWE run.

Gargano/Ciampa Interview

The indy team are asked if they like their chances. Gargano says everyone was surprised except for the two of them since they paid their dues. Ciampa says what Rhyno and Corbin said was disrespectful and they will be the winners of the tournament.

Dana Brooke/Emma Interview

Emma says her and Dana are missing out on all the fin. Dana says her and Emma are going to be showing the newbies who is in charge (the two of them) and that play time is over. Dana taps Devin on the head and Emma says that never gets old.

Sasha Banks is shown pulling up to Full Sail. Cue YES chants.

Kyle Edwards breaks down the first round of the Tag Team Classic and shows the second round matchups. He announces that the final 4 teams will take place at TakeOver on Oct. 7th.

The second round matchups are:

Hype Bros vs Gable and Jordan
Finn Balor and Samoa Joe vs Enzo & Cass
VaudeVillains vs Dash & Dawson
Rhyno & Corbin vs Gargano & Ciampa

Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa vs. Rhyno and Baron Corbin

Result: Baron Corbin and Rhyno defeats Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa via pinfall (End of Days).

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Rhyno starts off against Ciampa and the two trade chops to begin the match. Ciampa catches Rhyno with a huge clothesline. Corbin comes charging into the ring but Gargano dumps him over the ropes before hitting him with a suicide dive. He then does the same to Rhyno. Ciampa hits a cross body knocking down both guys on the outside as well.

Gargano and Ciampa isolate Rhyno and hit him with a series of tag team moves. Rhyno manages to tag in Corbin who is rained on with boos. Ciampa manages to use quickness to avoid Corbin, but Baron catches him with a side slam as we go to break.

Back from break and Corbin is in control of Ciampa. Rhyno and Corbin knock Ciampa around and keep him grounded in the corner. Rhyno puts Ciampa on the top rope, but Tomasso fights out of it and hits Rhyno with a missile dropkick. Ciampa and Rhyno both hit hot tags and Gargano starts taking out Corbin. He hits Corbin with a roll through kick and a springboard DDT for a two count. Ciampa and Rhyno jump into the ring and brawl. Rhyno goes for the Gore but Gargano jumps over him. Gargano charges at Corbin but gets caught with an End of Days. Corbin pins Gargano for the 3 count to end the contest.

Evan’s Note: While I wish that Gargano and Ciampa could continue their run in NXT in the tournament, Corbin and Rhyno represent the best heel team left in it. I could see Corbin and Rhyno making their way to the finals on TakeOver and representing the final challenge for whoever is the face team in the finals.

Vaudevillains Interview

Devin asks the tag champs about their matchup against Dash and Dawson in the Tag Team Classic. They say they would be honored to win the whole thing, and doing it as champs would be even sweeter. Blake, Murphy and Alexa come by to say that next week those two are invoking their rematch clause for next week. Alexa says they’ll get the belts back since Blue Pants is back where she belongs on the clearance rack. Blake and Murphy try to say indubitably like the Vaudevillains, but instead just call the champs “idiots.” Great stuff.

Next: Bayley Returns to Full Sail

The Nia Jax promo airs again. There are lots of new blood in the NXT women’s division and it’s extremely exciting.

Non Title Match – Bayley vs. Sarah Dobson

Result: Bayley defeats Sarah Dobson via pinfall (Bayley to Belly).

Rating: 2.7 out of 5 stars

Bayley runs into the crowd to celebrate with them in her homecoming as NXT Women’s Champion. Bayley even brought Izzy into the ring with her own replica championship and doing Bayley’s wave with her and even bumping titles before the match.

When the match gets underway, Dobson uses some stiff shots to take the champ down. She hits a cart-wheel knee strike to Bayley for a two count. Dobson puts Bayley in a wrapped headlock to try and ground the champ. Bayley rams Dobson into the turnbuckle to get free and then uses axe handles to take down her opponent. She catches Dobson with the Bayley to Belly for a quick victory.

Evan’s Note: This match was just meant to reintroduce Bayley as the Women’s champion, but her opponent Dobson looked good as well. I hope Dobson finds continually work in NXT and will do well in NXT.

Bayley/Sasha Banks Post-Match

Bayley gets the mic and begins to address the NXT crowd when Sasha Banks comes out to the ring. Banks says she’s here to congratulate Bayley and how at TakeOver Brooklyn the two of them stole the show. Banks says people have told her it was the match of the year and gets emotional talking about the match.

Banks says that’s great for everyone but her. Bayley earned Sasha’s respect but Sasha says she is still better. Bayley says she’s tired of being belittled and she’ll accept the rematch right here right now. Banks says no because she wants to prove a point. Banks wants to beat Bayley over and over and over again until people know fairy tales don’t have a happy ending.

Regal’s music hits and the General Manager says he’s got a great opportunity here. Regal says the two will have a match at TakeOver. He says they will be the main event, and the match will be a 30 minute Iron Man match. Banks and Bayley shake hands to end NXT this week.

Next: Final Thoughts

Final Thoughts

Another week and another solid episode of NXT television. Some matches for NXT TakeOver were announced which is good since there are precious few weeks left until the next event.

Sasha Banks and Bayley are going to have a tall task trying to out do their performance in Brooklyn. After the show that they put on in their first title match though, these two represent the perfect two women to main event an NXT TakeOver broadcast. The Iron Man match stipulation will also be exciting as it’s the first one since 2009 and the first Women’s one in WWE history. These two will tear the house down on October the 7th.

The Tag Tournament continues to be one of the best parts of NXT programming. The Gargano and Ciampa vs. Rhyno & Corbin match was a stellar bout and the amount of heart the competitors are putting into their matches is making each one feel significant. Having the end of the tournament be at TakeOver will make it even more meaningful.
