13. Survivor Series

Date: Nov. 22, 2015

Venue: Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia

A total gut punch.

Originally, Seth Rollins was set to defend the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Roman Reigns at Survivor Series, but an untimely knee injury during the WWE’s European tour forced Rollins to vacate the belt. The WWE acted fast and set up a tournament for the open title, which lasted two weeks and was set to culminate at Survivor Series.

For the most part, the actual matches in the tournament were great. A lot of different Superstars left all they had in the ring, making for some fantastic viewing. The problem was that it was a foregone conclusion that Reigns was going to win it all.

The predictability put a damper on the entire tournament, and when the finals were set—Roman Reigns versus Dean Ambrose—fans merely hoped that the inevitable Reigns victory would at least have a twist.

Well, after Reigns won in unremarkable fashion, his humdrum victory celebration was cut short by an even duller MITB briefcase cash-in. Reigns was champion for all of five minutes and fifteen seconds, and as Sheamus stood tall in the ring, holding the belt above his head, fans were forced to decide what was the lesser of two evils.

Other Survivor Series low points included a lackluster tag match between the Brothers of Destruction and the Wyatt Family, as well as a last-minute, 5-on-5 Survivor Series elimination match with no purpose besides maintaining tradition.
