TNA Releases Awesome Kong Following Backstage Incident

Former TNA Knockouts champion Awesome Kong has been released following a locker room altercation.

In a move that shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone, TNA has announced that it has released Kia Stevens aka Awesome Kong from her contract. This comes on the heels of a physical locker room altercation with Reby Sky during the U.K. tour, which saw Kong sent back home early. Reby Sky happens to be the wife of current TNA champion Matt Hardy and has a prominent role on TV right now.

Kong issued a brief statement on Twitter that confirmed her release.

TNA’s John Gaburick issued a statement justifying the decision, saying it was the “appropriate action” to take after conducting an investigation of the events. Kong and Sky have had personal beef in the past stemming from an incident that occurred in 2012.

What does this mean for Stevens’ future, though? And what of the future of TNA’s Knockouts Division, which saw Kong leading the heel stable The Dollhouse? It’s possible the faction moves on without her, but it would be yet another drastic change since Kong only recently replaced prior leader, Taryn Terrell.

Kong first debuted in TNA back in 2007 and quickly established herself as an unstoppable force, going on to have a memorable, long-running feud with Gail Kim. While she won the TNA Knockouts Championship twice, her time there was marked by controversy and backstage disputes.

In 2010 she was released from her TNA contract and signed with the WWE, debuting in April 2011 as Kharma. However, before the character could get off the ground, Stevens became pregnant and had to take a leave of absence. Her departure was explained in a bizarre sequence when Kharma hit the ring and rather than destroy the other Divas, she broke down crying.  She would eventually return to WWE as a surprise entrant in the 2012 Royal Rumble. She was released in 2013 and returned to TNA last year, basically picking up where she left off.

Chances are we haven’t seen the last of Awesome Kong, though. She’s expressed a desire to return to the WWE and the company, which is in the midst of focusing more on their Divas division, would probably see the benefit of a powerhouse matchup between Awesome Kong and current champion, Charlotte.
