Kenny Omega vs Tama Tonga

As expected, Fale and Loa came out with Tama and attacked Kenny before the bell. Hangman and Owens made the save, allowing the match to begin. Omega laid out Fale, Loa, and some young boys with a big tope con giro. Of course, Tama Tonga greeted him with a spear and some ground and pound as soon as Kenny reentered the ring.

The leader of the firing squad continued the rest of the match wanting to brawl, while Omega stayed levelheaded, wanting to go for a more pure wrestling style. They went back and forth for a while, but eventually Tonga lost his cool and gun stunned Red Shoes, getting DQ’d and handing Kenny the two points.

As interesting as the Elite vs Firing Squad story is right now, the beef between Firing Squad and Red Shoes is really where it’s at.

This was okay. I don’t hate the interference and DQs as much as many fans, but I do want it to be executed well when it happens. This honestly came off as sloppy at times, which made the moment fall somewhat flat. Still, it was effective in moving the story forward, which is what really matters.

Hirooki Goto vs Tomohiro Ishii

KEVIN KELLY CALLED ISHII “TOM”. I LOVE IT SO MUCH. I will probably only be referring to him as Tom for the remainder of this review.

Goto and Tom began the match exactly how you would expect. They traded shoulder blocks, stiff shots to the face, and angrily yelled at each other. I don’t really know what to say about this match… I could give a play by play but, with the way this match played out, it would just be really repetitive and unnecessary. Basically they just hit each other really hard over and over again and growled at each other a lot. I promise, it’s so much better than it sounds. Tom got the win with the brainbuster.

It’s matches like these that really suspend disbelief. When you’re watching guys like Goto and Tom go at it, you forget you’re watching scripted wrestling. It just feels like two guys beating each other up til one can’t get up. It’s straightforward, brutal, and fantastic overall. Tom will surely challenge Goto for the NEVER Openweight Championship in the near future. So we all have that to look forward to. STONE PITBULL FOREVER!

Rating: ****1/2

In conclusion, Night 6 emphatically continued the streak of great G1 shows. There’s an argument to be made that this was the best iteration yet. Juice vs Naito and Goto vs Ishii are some of the tournaments best matches so far, and each of the other three block matches delivered something unique and interesting.
