Getting Down to (This) Business Early

General Manager Kurt Angle, flanked by Constable Baron Corbin, comes out firing to start WWE Raw this week. Clearly, Angle is still furious about the close of last week’s show, when Brock Lesnar demolished everything in his path — including Angle himself.

But comparing Lesnar to Ronda Rousey in terms of willingness to compete? BURN. Folks, this is 2018 wrestling in a nutshell: one of the most storied competitors in WWE history (yes, Lesnar fits that bill) is being used to put over a relatively new superstar, and it making total sense.

Before Angle gets too far, Roman Reigns comes out to do his Big Dog thing. It’s a mixed bag, because Reigns is at his best when he’s less scripted, and that “When you kick the Big Dog out, who’s gonna protect the yard?” thing was total Vince McMahon trash.

Overall, though, the segment is pretty good. Reigns has a good point, and for selfish reasons wants to be sure Lesnar isn’t suspended. Corbin is the perfect little weasel here, too, making himself seem way more important than he really is as he justifies walking away from a rampaging Lesnar last week. But pay attention to how he did it: Corbin put over Finn Bálor as a somewhat worthy competitor by virtue of his reign as Universal Champion. It’s the little things, you know?

Of course, the jawing back and forth between Reigns and Corbin leads to a match RIGHT NOW, with Corbin getting in a cheap shot before the bell. A Superman punch by Roman leads us into commercial, and the match is under way.
