Roman Reigns vs. Constable Baron Corbin
Result: Roman Reigns defeated Constable Baron Corbin via pinfall
Rating: 3.0 out of 5 stars
You know what? I’ll say it: Reigns vs. Corbin could be a pretty good championship feud. The “Constable” name is dumb as hell, but the gimmick — authority lackey — suits Corbin well, and he’s got the talent and charisma to pull it off. Throw in his in-ring ability, and you have a pretty good, formidable heel challenger to a babyface world champ. As a former MITB briefcase holder, clearly someone had the same idea at some point.
This match here is Exhibit A in the case to prove how good that feud might be. Neither guy is an A-plus on the mic, but in the ring they have no problem turning things up to 11. Reigns is finally getting on track as the baby face everyone wants him to be, and a match like this is a great tune up for SummerSlam.
What’s interesting to me is that, even though no one ever really looks at Baron Corbin like a world title contender, he’s clearly got what it takes to be in the conversation. Look at him against Reigns here, standing almost a full head taller than The Big Dog and hanging with him in his business casual attire.
I think Baron relies on the half nelson cross face rest hold a bit too much, which hurts his credibility as a major threat. I don’t mind the rest hold itself, since he’s a sniveling coward who hides behind his authority despite not needing to. But changing things up would make him seem more formidable, because he can hurt you in so many different ways.
The closing moments of the match were just awesome. The Deep Six looked like a million bucks, and even knowing Roman would kick out I was literally on the edge of my seat waiting for the three count. Reigns being frustrated at not being able to put Corbin away gives him a small sense of doubt heading into a match with Brock Lesnar, who is nigh unbeatable.
Finn Bálor being on Reigns’s side is brilliant, too — Bálor is the one guy who always has Roman’s number. Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer, huh? Nice little opener, and I would love to see more of Reigns vs. Corbin in the future.
