Constable Baron Corbin vs. Tyler Breeze

Result: Constable Baron Corbin defeated Tyler Breeze via pinfall

Rating: 2.0 out of 5 stars

Apparently Corbin has taken it upon himself to book a few matches this week: one for him, and one for Finn Bálor. Ostensibly tune-ups for SummerSlam, it’s immediately clear what’s going on when Corbin’s opponent is introduced. Clearly, Big Baron is out to make things “easy” for himself, and somewhat difficult for Bálor.

But Tyler Breeze is nothing to sneeze at, and he gives Corbin more of a fight than the Constable bargained for. I like this concept of keeping Breeze on television while his tag team partner Fandango is out with an injury. It would have been devastating for Breeze to have gone the way of The Revival and been forgotten during his partner’s recovery.

Of course, Corbin manages to withstand anything Breeze throws at him, winning off a Deep Six. Making that move a secondary finisher as opposed to a signature move is wonderful, because it looks better against certain opponents than the End of Days. Plus, ending the occasional match with a “signature” takes away some of the predictability that often kills drama.

After the match, Corbin brings out Bálor’s opponents for his “tune-up” match. Yes, opponents plural, as the “big man” in Finn should have no problem handling two opponents. In a move that should surprise precisely no one, those opponents are Jinder Mahal and Kevin Owens. Gee, I wonder if Bálor’s old buddy Braun Strowman will be anywhere in the area?
