SmackDown’s Women Continue to Define WWE
The contract signing is one of the most overused tropes in WWE, and the company went back to that well this week on SmackDown Live to hype the triple threat TLC match between Becky Lynch, Asuka and Charlotte Flair for the SmackDown Women’s Championship. With the women’s segments always having been my favorite part of any WWE show since I was a kid, it’s always a bit deflating to learn the female Superstars are being relegated to contract signing duty.
However, WWE does manage to sneak in something not totally terrible into these things sometimes and this contract signing as a whole actually hit the mark. It gave Becky Lynch a platform to get herself even more over, as she does every week, and it set up quite a bit of tension between Asuka and Charlotte Flair. Old wounds were opened when Charlotte reminded the Empress that she squashed her mystique at WrestleMania, while Asuka taunted Charlotte by telling her she got lucky one time.
This led to Asuka and Charlotte teaming together against Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville. An errant boot from the Queen knocked Asuka off the ring apron and Asuka responded with a strike of her own that got Charlotte pinned by Deville.
Every woman involved in this match, including The Man sitting at ringside, was on top of her game. Asuka’s exaggerated concern after costing herself and Charlotte the match, Charlotte’s angry daze and Becky Lynch’s underwhelmed smirk, all further set the tone for what is sure to be a match of the year candidate when the three women meet for the title at TLC.
It will be a shame if Becky, Charlotte and Asuka don’t get the main event at TLC because these three women have the WWE Universe in the palms of their hands. And even though the SmackDown Women’s Title picture is what we’re all talking about, the rest of the female WWE Superstars are not-so-quietly playing major roles in deepening the roster. Women truly are taking over in WWE, and quite frankly it’s about time.
