AEW Fyter Fest is AEW’s second show and airs tonight with several great matches on what is a secondary show that will lead in to Fight for the Fallen in July. In a show featuring Cody vs. Darby Allin, The Elite vs. The Lucha Brothers & Laredo Kid, and Jon Moxley vs. Joey Janela in a non-sanctioned match.
While this card is a secondary show, airing on B/R Live for free, the card itself still looks fantastic. I expect Joey Janela and Jon Moxley will be absolute madness, and Darby Allin’s debut will be a revelation to many. Meanwhile, The Elite and the Lucha Bros & Laredo Kid will be a breathtaking affair. The show can also be viewed on Fite TV for international viewers, though not free, is definitely a good price point for anyone interested. Regardless, AEW Fyter Fest will still be a great show to watch.
After a very successful AEW Double or Nothing, this show will be key in seeing how AEW does in a followup. Every match on the card looks to be solid to great, so here is a run down of what we know so far:

AEW Fyer Fest opened with the triple threat tag team match, starting the show off hot.
Private Party (Isiah Kassidy & Marq Quen) vs. SoCal Uncensored (Frankie Kazarian & Scorpio Sky) vs. The Best Friends (Chuck Taylor & Trent Beretta)
Trent opened the match with Kassidy, and after hitting a shoulder block, Trent tagged out to Chuck. Taylor also hit a shoulder block, knocking Kassidy to the mat. Kazarian came in next and faced off against Quen. Quen, however, got taken out wit ha great combo from Kaz, and him and Sky began to work over Marq.
Quen rolled out and Trent came in the ring and locked up with Scorpio Sky. As Trent did a go over, Kazarian nailed him with a dropkick, and SCU started a double teaming Trent Beretta. Beretta tried to make a comeback with a series of chops, but as Kazarian hit the ropes, Quen made a blind tag and took out both Kazarian and Trent.
Quen then took out everyone before Private Party started to double team Kazarian. Quen hit the Silly String, and Kassidy hit an Asai Moonsault to the outside onto everyone! SCU and the Best Friends entered the ring and swarmed Private Party and sent them to the outside. The Best friends hit a suplex on Kassidy on the floor while SCU double teamed Quen.
Kazarian hit a tornado DDT on Quen on the outside. Meanwhile, in the ring, the Best Friends double teamed Kassidy. SCU broke up the hug attempt, but the Best Friends sent SCU to the floor and then hugged each other. Chuck threw Kassidy like a lawn dart, and Trent hit an Ace crusher, but Kassidy kicked out.
Trent nailed Kassidy with a chop and tagged in Chuck. Trent came back in and hit a Northern Lights suplex, but Kassidy kicked out. Chuck hit a dropkick on Isiah’s arm and locked on a chin lock. Rating: *** (3 stars out of 5)
This was a great, exciting, fast paced tag match to open the show. It saw all three teams given lots of offence to look strong, and Private Party lost nothing in losing to the Best Friends. It took everything to beat them.
After the match, The Dark Order came on the screen, and Evil Uno cut a promo about how The Best Friends were their first target, and they will destroy them. The lights went out in the building after they snapped their fingers. As the lights came back on The Dark Order’s minions surrounded the ring. As Chuck and Trent waited for them to attack, the lights went off again and when they came back on, they were gone.
I’m not sure about The Dark Order, but I’m willing to give it time.
The Young Bucks came on the screen, and they played a video making fun of the Fyre Fest. This was absolutely fantastic.
The Librarian Leva Bates came out and shushed the crowd.
Peter Avalon shushed her off screen, but as it turns out, he was in the tent on the stage. Avalon got angry at Leva and threw the tent off the stage. He then decapitated one of the mannequins on the stage.
Bates said that the audience was full of gamers, but there was more to life than games, and reading matters. Avalon echoed her sentiments, as some in the audience chanted “We can’t read!” They then proceeded to shush each other until Allie’s music hit and came down to the ring with a nice reaction.
Allie vs. Leva Bates (w/ Peter Avalon)
Allie tried to lock up, but Leva ducked. Bates kept shushing Allie, but Allie grabbed her finger and bent it, working over her index finger. Allie stomped on the finger, and Leva rolled to the outside. Allie then shushed Leva as Brandi Rhodes was seen backstage watching the monitor (like a human being, actually looking at it).
Leva sent Allie to the corner, and Allie hit the middle rope and flew backwards with a flying crossbody. Allie then hit a Russian Leg Sweep. Allie hit the ropes, but Peter tripped Allie. Leva took advantage and sent Allie to the floor. Leva hit a Fisherman’s Buster, but didn’t go for the pin. Allie tried to fight back, but Leva hit a Northern Lights Suplex. Allie kicked out. Allie got a rollup when Leva got distracted by Avalon. The crowd chanted “Hooked on Phonics” as Leva locked on a submission on Allie, but as she pulled the hair, so the ref broke it.
Leva hit a series of chops on Allie, and Allie turned it around and hit a series of harder chops. Leva hit a shotgun dropkick before hitting triangle double knees on Allie who was on the mat. Allie hit a neckbreaker, and both women were down. Allie then hit a series of forearms and chops as they got up and drove Leva into the corner before hitting a sliding forearm, but Leva kicked out. Allie got out of a fireman’s carry, but Leva blocked a superkick, hit a lung blower, and then a Pedigree! Allie kicked out. Peter Avalon got onto the apron and tried to throw a book to Leva, but Allie caught it, threw it at Leva, and then hit a superkick to get the pinfall victory.
Result: Allie

Michael Nakazawa vs. Alex Jebailey – Hardcore Match
Michael Nakazawa cut a promo about how CEO sucked and told Jebailey that he was glad his right leg was better. Alex said it was his left leg. Nakazawa kicked his left leg.
Jebailey and Nakawazastarted to wrestle, but Nakazawa oiled himself up and escaped the waistlock. Alex hit the ropes, but slipped on the mat, and the ref slipped and fell too. Nakazawa poured oil on Alex and slipped as he went for a double stomp, turning it into a senton.
Alex kicked out. Alex rolled to the outside, grabbed a clipboard and broke it over Nakazawa’s head. Jebailey then hit him with a controller before going back to the stage before trying to drown Nakazawa in the pool at ringside.
The ref asked if he gave up, which was hilarious. Nakazawa hit Jebailey with pool toy and spit water in his eyes. Jebailey body slammed Nakazawa into the pool. They got back to the ring and Alex setup a table and threw a Gamecube controller into the ring. Nakazawa grabbed the controller and attacked Alex with it. Nakazawa speared Alex off the apron through the table, but as they went back into the ring, he refused to pin Alex and beat on him with a kendo stick.
Nakazawa pulled of his undergarments, somehow without removing his tights, thank goodness. Alex stopped him from shoving it into his face, and poured a bunch of buttons on the mat that Alex back body dropped Nakazawa on the buttons. Nakazawa went to put his thong into the face of Alex again, but he ducked and Nakazawa hit the ref with it. The ref was down as Alex was got the pinfall, and Nakazawa reversed it and pinned him with a thong to the face. This was weird.
Result: Michael Nakazawa

This match was awful, but it was fun. So, I guess that’s a win. It didn’t have to be great, it just had to be entertaining, and I think it was in this case.
Jim Ross made his entrance as the preshow came to close for commentary.
Jon Moxley cut a promo telling the crowd that they were about to find out exactly who he was as the preshow ended.
Christopher Daniels (SCU) vs. CIMA (Strong Hearts)
Daniels started the match with a armdrag and armbar to keep CIMA on the mat. Daniels couldn’t keep CIMA down for long though, as he hit a dropkick and a baseball slid to the outside. CIMA hit a flipping senton to the chest of Daniels once it was back in the ring. CIMA locked on a submission, and Daniels had to drag himself to the ropes.
CIMA hit the ropes and Daniels hit a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker, and then hit a Northern Lights Suplex on the floor. Daniels slammed CIMA on the mat twice before hitting an STO, but CIMA kicked out. Daniels hit a vertical suplex and a moonsault on the back before locking on the crossface.
Daniels drove CIMA into the corner and hit shoulder thrusts to the stomach before running at the corner. CIMA dodged and hit a lung blower on Daniels. CIMA hit an Iconoclasm, but Daniels kicked out. CIMA went for a suplex, but his back gave out and Daniels hit a Blue Thunder Bomb and then Angel’s Wings! CIMA kicked out.
CIMA hit an enziguri and then hit a sunset flip running powerbomb on Daniels before hitting the Perfect Driver, but Daniels kicked out! Daniels. CIMA hit an island Driver before hitting Metora and got the pinfall over Christopher Daniels! This was a huge win for CIMA, who has much needed momentum going into his match against Kenny Omega at Fight for the Fallen.
Result: CIMA
Rating *** (3 stars out of 5)
This was an excellent opener for the main card, and firmly established CIMA as a threat to anyone he faces. Fantastic match. Daniels and CIMA shook hands after the match and Daniels left the ring to let CIMA celebrate.
Riho vs. Nyla Rose vs. Yuka Sakazaki
Riho looked terrified as Nyla came out, and immediately came across as an incredible babyface. Yuka came out as a ball of energy, and the crowd loved her. Nyla hit a vertical suplex on Yuka and a body press on Riho. Nyla put Riho on the top rope at the middle of the ring and went to the top rope before hitting a flying knee off the top rope onto Riho! Holy cow. Nyla took way too much time and didn’t go for a pinfall and pointed to the sky one more time.

Nyla attacked Riho after the bell ,but Yuka and Riho hit a double dropkick and sent Nyla to the floor. Riho shoved Yuka away, which broke Yuka’s heart. Riho bowed to her and exited the ring. This was fantastic, and all three walked out of this match as bigger stars with how it was structured.

Really solid match here that highlighted everyone, but really pushed MJF vs. Hangman Page. Page won, as he’s getting the title shot, and he got a great reaction from the crowd, coming across as legit main eventer.
Cody (w/ Brandi Rhodes) vs. Darby Allin
A really creepy promo aired for Darby Allin.
Darby walked out with a body bag that had Cody 1-1 written on it, indicating that he would be the first man to defeat Cody in AEW. Cody made his entrance and got a massive reaction. Allin gave Cody a look of death, and was not at all intimidated by the bigger man. Both men locked up, and Allin was able to keep up with him on the exchange of holds.
Every attempt by Cody to outwrestle him saw Darby swiftly move and avoid any major blows. Cody locked on a headlock takeover, and put his weight on Darby to keep him down. Darby went for a hiptoss, but he couldn’t get Cody over, so Darby went up onto the top rope and flipped over hitting an armdrag. Cody look frustrated on the outside, as he was out wrestled by this smaller man.
Cody got rolled up with a La Magistral cradle, but Cody kicked out and slapped Darby. Cody dropped down and hit an uppercut on Allin, and threw Allin through the middle rope, as Allin flew to the outside after nailing the ring post. That was an incredible spot. Allin, as he came back into the ring, smashed Cody’s left hand and wrist into the ring post. Cody knew he was hurt, so he hit a flat liner and went for a pinfall quickly while selling the hand. Allin kicked out. Cody hit a huge clothesline with his right arm, rather than his left, turning Allin inside out. Allin kicked out again.
Cody tried to lock on a butterfly lock, but Allin got to his feet and Cody couldn’t hold on due to the injured hand. Allin was soon locked in it again, but Cody couldn’t quite keep it held the way he wanted to. Cody hit another throwing suplex, and kept selling his hand. Darby ate a lot of punishment from Cody with Cody’s right hand via punches and chops.
Allin keeps taking everything that Cody has to offer, as Cody went for a stalling vertical suplex. Allin immediately grabbed Cody’s hand and broke free, hitting a corkscrew splash and a wristlock. Allin punched Cody’s hand and headbutted it while continuing to punish the injured hand. Allin hit a suicide dive on Cody after Cody made it to the ropes on the outside.
Cody managed to hit his own suicide dive but continued to sell the hand. Allin rolled over the top of Cody and hit a shotgun dropkick then a Code Red, but Cody kicked out! There were 5 minutes remaining in the match. Allin went to the top rope, but Cody cut him off and hit a super inverted suplex!

Darby Allin went for a flying back press off the top rope onto Cody, but Cody dodged and Darby landed right on the apron. Allin slapped Cody, and Cody slapped him back.

Cody grabbed him and hit a Cross Rhodes, somehow, as Justin Roberts counted down the last 10 seconds. Cody literally went for the pin as and got to 2 just as the time ran out.
Result: Draw
Rating: **** (4 stars out of 5)
The story told in this match was excellent. This was something that put Allin over huge as a tough guy.
As the crowd chanted for 5 more minutes, Shawn Spears came down to the ring and nailed Cody with a chairshot to the head. This was an unprotected chair shot, which I am not okay with. Cody was bleeding everywhere afterwards, and MJF and SCU ran down and chased Spears off. MJF, a noted fan of Cody, was the first one there. I like that touch. Dean Malenko came out and helped carry Cody to the back.
Can I say this clearly though: please, no unprotected chairshots to the head. Ever. Please. Cody was bleeding everywhere hard way, and he might have a concussion. We know better than this these days. Careers have ended because of unprotected chairshots.

The Lucha Brothers (Pentagon Jr. & Rey Fenix) & Laredo Kid vs. The Elite (Kenny Omega, Matt Jackson, & Nick Jackson)
The Elite came out dressed as Akuma (Omega), Ryu (Matt Jackson), and Ken (Nick Jackson). Justin Roberts said, “Round One! Fight!” like it was Street Fighter, and it was awesome. Laredo and Nick Jackson started the match, locking up and exchanging some quick moves and holds, ending with a double dropkick where neither man had the advantage.
Laredo Kid locked Nick in a headlock and hit the ropes before slapping Nick in the back of the head. Kid slid to the apron and hit a diving crossbody, but they exchanged a series of moves again, including blocked superkicks. Soon, all six men were in the ring facing off, with Omega and Pentagon face to face, playing off their All In match last year.
The Elite hit the ropes, but superkicks and a dropkick stopped them. Laredo Kid hit a Asai Moonsault as the Lucha Bros hit stero tope con giros. Pentagon hit a sling blade on Omega then put Kid on Matt Jackson’s shoulders and superkicked Matt into a reverse hurricanrana. Laredo Kid hit a moonsault on Nick Jackson and got a near fall.
Nick Jackson took both Lucha Brothers down with a flying headscissors and Matt Jackson hit a series of rolling Northern Lights suplexes on Laredo Kid and the Lucha Bros too. Matt tagged in Kenny Omega, who got a massive pop. Omega has gotten the biggest reaction of the night, to be sure. Omega chopped the crap out of Kid and hit a diving elbow strike in the corner.
Omega hit a huge backbreaker, but Kid kicked out. Omega hit a dropkick right to Kid’s face as he went for a flying cross body off the top rope. Omega went for Rise of the Terminator, but Pentagon Jr cut him off and said “No! Cero Miedo!” and these two picked up right where they left off at all in. Pentagon threw his glove to the ref and shoved Omega.
Both men started exchanging strikes, and Pentagon killed Omega with a chop, but Omega hit a dropkick to the knee and a crusher, but Fenix cut him off. The Bucks superkicked him off the apron, and the Elite were alone with Laredo Kid. Omega hit a straight jacket German suplex on Kid. Omega went for You Can’t Escape, hit it, and the Bucks followed with Matt Jackson hitting an elbow, and Nick Jackson hitting a senton bomb.
Laredo Kid kicked out as Omega covered him with his one foot, with a very Jericho like pinfall. Omega might have been sending a message to Chris Jericho. Laredo Kid hit a drop toe hold on Matt which sent him into Nick, spearing him. Laredo Kid landed on his feet after an Omega German attempt.
Pentagon hit a superkick on Matt Jackson and hit a lung blower on Omega. Fenix hit a pump kick on Omega on the floor and a step up Rana on Omega. Laredo Kid hit a suicide dive on Nick Jackson. Pentagon hit a flying double stomp on Matt Jackson, who was in the ring. Matt Jackson kicked out.
Pentagon tried to break Matt Jackson’s arm, but Matt rolled out and hit a series of strikes on Pentagon before hitting a Canadian Destroyer and a spear on Pentagon! Matt Jackson made the hot tag to Omega, and Pentagon got to Laredo Kid, but Omega didn’t see it. Omega hit a snap dragon suplex on both Pentagon and Fenix, and then a V-Trigger on Kid and a snap dragon on him too!
Omega went to the middle rope, but Pentagon kicked him in the face. Pentagon sent Nick Jackson to the outside and backdropped his own brother over the top rope, and over the turnbuckle onto Nick Jackson! Nick Jackson superkicked Kid, Fenix superkicked Nick Jackson, Matt Jackson superkicked Fenix, Pentagon superkicked Matt, Omega superkicked Pentagon, and all the men were down.
The Elite hit a triple superkick on all three men, then a triple Liger bomb for the near fall. Fenix and Laredo Kid were propped up on the middle ropes, and Nick Jackson hit a 450 splash on both of them. Pentagon punted Omega in the head. Nick Jackson went for a moonsault to the outside on Pentagon, but Pentagon dodged and hit a slingblade on Nick. Omega hit a V-Trigger on Kid and went for the Rise of the Terminator again.
Fenix cut him off and hit a cutter, but Nick Jackson ran in and attacked. All men ended up on the outside and Fenix managed to hit a Spanish Fly onto everyone while Nick Jackson was balanced on the ropes. Omega hit a V-Trigger and a Jay Driller on Kid, but Kid kicked out. Omega killed him with a V-Trigger again and then hit the One Winged Angel for the pinfall!
Result: The Elite

Joey Janela vs. Jon Moxley – Non-sanctioned Match
Justin Roberts told the fans that AEW Fyter Fest is officially over, as the following match is non-sanctioned, with no time limits. This was old school, like the NWA back in the day with lights out matches, or non-sanctioned. Fantastic stuff.
Jon Moxley made his first entrance in AEW, and I love his theme. I hope it’s released soon so I can rock out to it at home.
Moxley started the match with two hard chops and Janela sent him to the floor and followed with a suicide dive. Moxley and Janela soon brawled into the crowd. Janela threw Moxley back to ringside and threw him into the ring post. Janela brought out a table and grabbed a fans prosthetic leg to wack Moxley. Moxley grabbed a chair and brought it into the ring.
Moxley body slammed Janela while holding a chair. Janela dodged an attack and setup the chair and sat Moxley on it. He then did a senton bomb, but Moxley moved out of the way, and Janela crashed through the chair. Moxley went looking under the ring for a barbed wire wrapped chair. Janela immediately backed away as Moxley slammed Janela and the put the chair on Janela’s chest and stomped on it.
The crowd chanted “You sick ****” and Moxley took a bow. Janela cut him off before he could do a double stomp and hit a hurricanrana onto the chair on Moxley. Janela then hit Moxley in the back with the barbed wire chair. Janela picked up a table and set it up in the corner. One of the announcers asked about how to recover from a shot with a barbed wire chair, and JR said “Counseling. A couple years off work,” which was a fantastic line.
Mox tried to throw Janela over the top rope through the table, but Janela hit a Russian Leg Sweep off the apron and through the table. Both men got back in the ring, and Moxley picked up Janela and speared him through the table in the corner. Moxley grabbed two tables from under the ring and set them up. After Moxley set them up, Janela gave him the finger, and Moxley beat on him and pulled a barbed wire board from under the ring.
Moxley set up the board in the corner and tried to slam Janela through it. Janela floated over and hit a death valley driver into the board, and got a near fall. Janela nailed Moxley with a forearm, but Moxley flew out of the corner with a lariat that destroyed Janela. Janela hit a big superkick on Moxley, and Moxley ended up on the apron.
Janela pulled out a ladder form under the ring, but Moxley slid out the ring and sneaked up behind him and pulled him to the outside. Janela slammed Moxley’s head into the ring steps and put him on the tables. Janlea climbed up the ladder from in the ring and hit a flying elbow drop through the tables!
Janela pulled out a barbed wire board of his own from under the ring and he setup a bridge with it between the guardrail and the apron. Moxley got back in the ring and hit the double arm DDT. Moxley then picked Janela up and hit a death valley bomb through the barbed wire board to the floor. That was ugly. Moxley picked Janela up and then sent him back into the ring.
Janela slapped Moxley and Moxley killed him with a series of knees to the face before grabbing a bucket from under the ring. Moxley pulled a bag from the bucket and poured a pile of thumbtacks on the mat. Moxley took the boots off Joey Janela, leaving him bare foot. This is going to be bad. Moxley tried to throw him feet first, but Janela got out.
Mox did a flipping suplex bomb to him into the tacks and then sent him feet first into it too. Janela flipped Moxley off, and Moxley went back into the bucket for another bag full of thumbtacks. Moxley hit an elevated double arm DDT on Janela into the second pile of thumbtacks! Moxley gets the win.
Result: Jon Moxley
Rating ****1/2 (4.5 stars out of 5)
That was a ridiculous hardcore deathmatch. While it wasn’t a mat classic, everything these two did worked here as both men killed each other in this style. Moxley proved that he isn’t the same man he was in WWE. This isn’t Dean Ambrose. This is Jon Moxley. Janela came across as a star that could hang with Moxley, and Moxley got a big win going into Fight With the Fallen and All Out.

Kenny Omega ran down and took out Jon Moxley with a V-Trigger. He hit a piledriver on Moxley through a table, and then a flying double stomp off from the ring through a table that was on top of Moxley. Omega brought Moxley to the stage area and sent him flying face first into a drum kit on the stage. Omega killed Moxley with a guitar to the back and walked away, leaving Moxley laying.
Moxley was being helped backstage by the refs, but Moxley shoved them away. Omega ran back out with a garbage can and smashed Moxley with it before hitting Moxley with a double arm DDT (now known as the Paradigm Shift) on the garbage can. Moxley smiled after this beating, showing he got what he wanted.

Final Thoughts
This was an excellent showing from AEW. Aside from the unprotected chairshot to Cody’s head, everything here was great. Every match was different and told a story leading into the future shows, and played of what happened at All In and Double or Nothing. For one, I can’t wait for Fight for the Fallen.
All the little things they did here was great, with down to Moxley smiling as Omega beat the life out of him. The only criticism I have is that unprotected chairshot to Cody’s head. I understand what they were trying to do with Spears “breaking the script” but I didn’t like it. Cody getting his hands up would have been just as effective. Otherwise, this was an excellent second showing for AEW, and I’m becoming more and more invested in the stories they’re telling.
Show Rating: **** (4 stars out of 5)
