1. AJ Styles vs. John Cena – SummerSlam 2016

When these two started feuding during the summer of 2016, it was – for long time fans familiar with the careers of both men – the meeting of the minds between two franchise players of rival companies. John Cena had spent the past decade as the face of the WWE while AJ Styles spent a decade himself as the biggest star to come out of Impact Wrestling and spent the previous couple years as one of NJPW’s key players.

Their first ever meeting at Money in the Bank was good for what it was, but it was very much a feeling out process between two competitors who had never competed against each other before. Over the course of two months, they got more familiar with each other during tag team matches, like the one at Battleground, and by time they got to SummerSlam, their chemistry was at an all time high. It made for one classic for the ages.

Unpredictable counter after counter. Heart pulsing kick out after kick out. This match was an absolute thrill ride from start to finish unlike anything the SummerSlam stage had seen before, and that’s saying something! It’s debatable whether or not their Royal Rumble rematch four months later was superior to this match, but as far as how this compares to other SummerSlam matches, it does not get better than this.
