Velveteen Dream (c) vs. Pete Dunne vs. Roderick Strong- NXT North American Championship Triple Threat Match

Now, we get to the match with the most confounding build of the quintet. It started with Roderick Strong pinning the Velveteen Dream in a six-man tag team match all the way back in June. Dream responded by…saying that Strong wasn’t worthy of an NXT North American Championship match despite Strong scoring a win over Dream.

Sure, Dream is far from a conventional babyface, but saying that a wrestler who’s already beaten you isn’t a viable contender is a full-on heel move and probably not what the NXT creative team was going for.

Then, Pete Dunne gets added to the match because, uh, he held the WWE United Kingdom Championship for two years. So, Strong — the heel in this story — pins the North American Champion, has to listen to said champion tell anyone willing to listen that he’s undeserving of a title shot, and when he finally gets his match, another person gets inserted into the proceedings just cause.

Did Vince McMahon sneak down to Florida to book this feud?

The odd lead-up notwithstanding, these three could garner some Match of the Night considerations on Saturday. Everyone knows how fantastic Dunne and Strong are in terms of workrate and, while Dream is the least experienced of the three, he has shown his prodigious ring skills and athleticism will help him keep pace with the two ring generals.

Outside of the storyline, Dunne was likely brought in to take the loss here. He’s accrued enough equity to where a loss won’t damage him too much, so don’t be surprised if Strong beats him to protect Dream and bring the Undisputed Era one step closer to holding all the gold.

Prediction: Roderick Strong pins Pete Dunne, wins the NXT North American Championship
