Ember Moon, the Shenom of the WWE, is scheduled to battle Bayley for the SmackDown Women’s Championship at SummerSlam this Sunday. The following will give three important reasons why Moon should dethrone Bayley at the biggest event of the summer.
Ever since joining the main roster, Moon has performed in matches from time to time, but has never really been involved in any major feuds. Now, she is finally involved in a major feud with Bayley as she aims to shock the world at SummerSlam.
When Moon arrived on SmackDown Live via the Superstar Shake-Up, she was frequently bullied by Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville. They slapped her novel out of her hands, and broke her Nintendo Switch, which ignited Moon as well as the flame in her luminous eyes.
In order to balance out the playing field, Moon needed a tag team partner to take on Rose and Deville. She then found SmackDown Women’s Champion Bayley to help her, and they worked together to win a Tag Team match against Fire and Desire on SmackDown Live three weeks ago.
After the match, Bayley was impressed by Moon’s work in the ring, and thereby handpicked Moon to be her opponent for the SmackDown Women’s Championship at SummerSlam. Evidently, Moon accepted the challenge, and these two began to play mind games with each other on the next few weeks leading up to SummerSlam.
These mind games were so impactful that these two could not even remain on the same page when they teamed up again against Alexa Bliss and Cross two weeks later. However, Moon knows how to win on her own, and she needs this win against Bayley this Sunday in order to propel her career to greater heights.
With that being said, let’s draw out three key reasons why Moon should win at SummerSlam this Sunday.
3. Ember Moon needs to win her first main roster championship
Ember Moon is one of the most talented NXT acquisitions to ever step foot in the WWE main roster. Considering that she debuted on the Raw after WrestleMania 34 last year, she needs to win her first championship on the main roster now before it’s too late.
Many may think that wins in WWE don’t matter as much since choreographed storylines and entertainment are central to this company. However, it definitely matters for Moon.
As many WWE fans know, Moon is known as the “shenom.” A “shenom” is a female up-and-comer who is outstandingly talented or admired.
In NXT, Moon was well-known for always being “close” to dethroning Asuka for the NXT Women’s Championship and to conquering the undefeated streak. On Raw, she was unfortunately not involved in any major storylines.
For a superstar who should be outstandingly talented or admired, this is not what her WWE resume should look like. Now that she is on SmackDown Live, she needs to redefine her career and prove why the WWE fanbase should believe in her as the “shenom.”
On top of that, if Ember Moon loses to Bayley on Sunday, there will be no further direction for her in the SmackDown Live Women’s Division. Why? Because there would be no reason for her to get a title rematch, especially after getting handpicked to have this title match at SummerSlam to begin with.
Secondly, since she doesn’t have a tag team partner, she can’t even target the only other women’s title in the WWE: the Women’s Tag Team Championship. However, her opponent at SummerSlam certainly can.
2. Bayley needs to revive the women’s tag team division with Sasha Banks
Now that Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross are Women’s Tag Team Champions, there are minimal opponents for them to defend their titles against. This could lead the women’s tag team division into total disarray.
The women’s tag team division is currently more infinitesimal than the cruiserweight division. Furthermore, there’s only one babyface women’s Tag Team who would be well suited to face the heel champs Bliss and Cross, and that team is the Kabuki Warriors.
Considering that the Kabuki Warriors already failed to capture the Women’s Tag Team Championships on Raw last week, another babyface Women’s Tag Team is needed to keep the division alive.
Due to the rumors of a Sasha Banks return, Bayley could very well drop the SmackDown Women’s Championship to Moon at SummerSlam, and reunite with Sasha Banks to get their titles back from Bliss and Cross.
Sasha Banks and Bayley, also known as the Boss N’ Hug Connection, were the first ever Women’s Tag Team Champion and were regarded as one of the most impeccable women’s tag teams to ever be formulated on the main roster due to their incredible “chemistry” inside and outside the ring. Their amicable “bond” was incredibly “covalent.”
With all the chemistry puns aside, Bayley did mention that she would want to drop the SmackDown Women’s Title to “someone who is worthy of a title opportunity, has charisma, someone who I’ve never faced before, someone that’s dedicated to the championship should I lose…”
With the Sasha Banks return rumors looming, Moon is the perfect description of the certain “someone” whom Bayley wants to drop the title to and now is the time to pull the trigger for Moon’s first main roster title reign.
1. Charlotte Flair needs someone new to dethrone when SmackDown moves to Fox
Charlotte Flair is bound to be the face of the women’s division when SmackDown Live moves to Fox. If she defeats the legendary Trish Stratus at SummerSlam, she will inevitably be in the title scene once again.
If Ember Moon dethrones Bayley at SummerSlam, Charlotte can target her instead of Bayley, whom she had battled multiple times in the past. A fresh feud between Moon and Flair is exactly what the SmackDown Women’s Division needs.
Considering that Bayley cashed in her MITB contract to win the SmackDown Women’s Championship from Charlotte Flair at MITB 2019, it would be neat for Charlotte and Bayley to battle one more time.
However, Moon and Flair are two top-notch superstars who have not yet had a legitimate feud on the main roster, and it would be a waste to not capitalize on such a feud with the momentum they got going for them at this moment in their careers.
In fact, Charlotte already took a shot at Moon when she claimed that she would get herself a SummerSlam opponent “better than Ember Moon.” This was stated in Charlotte’s backstage interview after she lost to Moon on Smackdown Live.
If these two were to face off in the months after SummerSlam, Charlotte would most likely dethrone Moon. This would sadly make Moon a transitional champion.
Nonetheless, even if the time might be short, a championship victory for Moon would help give her more TV time to manifest her character to the WWE Universe. There’s only hope that she will be pushed straight to the “moon.”
