AEW Full Gear featured Cody vs. Chris Jericho for the AEW World Championship and Kenny Omega vs. Jon Moxley in a Lights Out, Unsanctioned match.

After six weeks of TV, AEW debuts with their first PPV since the beginning of AEW Dynamite. In the six weeks that preceded the PPV, we have seen Riho crowned the first AEW World Women’s Champion and SCU crowned the first AEW World Tag Team Champions. Tonight, every title is on the line, along with several grudge matches that will carry this PPV.

The Young Bucks will face the former LAX, Proud n’ Powerful, and SCU vs. Private Party vs. Lucha Bros, Joey Janela vs. Shawn Spears, Riho vs. Emi Sakura, Adam Page vs. PAC, and Bea Priestly vs. Britt Baker. Every match is set to deliver, with Spears and Janela kind of coming out of nowhere, but nonetheless, it should also be a good one.

The Buy-In

The show opened with Taz, Goldenboy, and Excalibur on commentary. A hype video aired for Britt Baker and Bea Priestly and Britt talked extensively about how Bea Priestly concussed her at Fight for the Fallen.

Bea Priestly (1-2) vs. Britt Baker (4-2)

Baker went right after Bea, but Bea fled to the outside of the ring. Bea couldn’t stay away though, and Baker hit a Thesz Press. Bea was unable to get offence early and Baker rolled through into a Lockjaw attempt, but Bea rolled out and stomped on Baker’s head. Bea whipped Britt into the corner and started working over Baker’s back and head, wrapping her around the ring post.

Priestly hit a diving back elbow to Britt Baker, driving her throat into the ropes. Baker kicked out at 2. Priestly started working over the back again, but let go when Britt made the ropes. Britt tried to pick up Priestly, but her back gave out and Bea kicked her in the head for a 2 count. Priestly is clearly trying to concuss her again with all the attacks to the head.

Both women exchanged forearms and hit the ropes, but Baker hit a clothesline, shoulder block, a back elbow, and then a running knee in the corner. Bea was whipped to the other side and jumped off the top rope over Britt, but Britt responded with the sling blade and a swinging Fisherman’s Neckbreaker for a 2 count.

Baker ran at the corner, but Bea elbowed her in the face and climbed the top rope. Britt cut her off and climbed up with her. Baker hit a superplex off the middle rope and floated through into another suplex, but her back gave out again. Priestly went for a clothesline, but Baker hit a cutter and got a 2 count. Bea turned it into a crucifix, but Baker kicked out.

Priestly hit a German suplex and a Capture back suplex for a 2 count. Priestly locked on a chin lock that worked over the arm and back of Baker. Baker made the ropes. Baker rolled to the apron, but Bea ran up the ropes and hit a springboard double stomp to Britt on the apron for a 2 count! Bea put Britt on her shoulders and went for the Ocean Cyclone Suplex, but Britt fought out and hit a Canadian Destroyer for a 2 count!

Baker responded by getting up and hitting the Paige Turner and going for Lockjaw, but Priestly rolled out. Baker hit a superkick to Bea’s face and then went right back to Lockjaw and after a battle for the submission, she finally locked it on and Bea immediately tapped out. Very solid opening match here on the preshow.

Result: Britt Baker (5-2)

Rating: *** (3 stars)

Britt Baker is clearly still green, but she has good chemistry with Bea Priestly, and Bea worked very well within Baker’s limitations and helped get the best out of her on this one.

A video started on screen with a bunch of tea candles being blown out. A gong hit and Awesome Kong was on the entrance ramp with Brandi Rhodes! Kong hit a spinning backfist on Bea. She took her glove off and took out a knife that she handed to Brandi Rhodes before hitting the double chickenwing facebuster. Brandi handed the knife back to Kong and they cut some of Bea’s hair off.

This was weird, but I liked it. Kong wrapped the hair around her waist as a trophy, next to the other hair on her belt, and she left the ring with Brandi Rhodes.

Main Show

Our main show opens with a tag team match between The Young Bucks and Proud n’ Powerful!

The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson) (6-3) vs. Proud n’ Powerful (Santana & Ortiz) (2-0)

Matt ducked an enziguri, but Santana and Ortiz rolled Santana into a cutter on Matt Jackson.

Ortiz hit a dive onto Nick Jackson on the floor while Matt kicked out of a pinfall attempt. Ortiz picked up Matt Jackson and they went for the Street Sweeper, but Matt countered it with a Belly to Belly off Ortiz’s shoulders. Matt Jackson rolled up Ortiz for a near fall, and then hit the Motor City Machine Gun’s finisher for a 2 count.

Nick Jackson went for the Meltzer Driver, and as he did the springboard he fell to the mat, clutching his knee. Matt put Nick onto the top rope to setup More Bang for your Buck, but Santana and Ortiz cut Matt off and sent him back to his corner. Nick tagged in and spit his gum at Santana. Santana picked it up and started chewing it.

Santana spit it back at him and Nick ran wild with kicks, but his leg couldn’t keep up and they powerbombed Nick for a 2 count. Ortiz picked up Nick and Santana and Ortiz hit the Street Sweeper for the pinfall!

Result: Santana and Ortiz (3-0)

Rating: ****1/4 (4.25 stars)

Sammy Guevara came down to the ring after the match and the 3 on 2 beat down started on the Bucks, but the Rock n’ Roll Express made the save and the Bucks helped Ricky Morton fly over the top rope into a Canadian Destroyer on Santana! Morton then flew through the middle rope with a suicide dive onto Guevara and Ortiz! That was awesome.

PAC hit a superkick and a release German suplex on Page, but Page responded with a pop-up powerbomb! Page picked PAC up for Deadeye, but PAC fought out and transitioned into the Brutalizer! PAC screamed “Ask him!” as Page slowly started to fall back down to the mat. Page almost fell unconscious, but he fell into the bottom rope.

PAC climbed up for the Black Arrow, but Page moved and went for the Buckshot Lariat, but PAC ducked and almost went into the referee! PAC tried for a low blow on Page, but Page caught it and murdered him with a forearm, a clothesline, and then finally the Deadeye for the win!

Result: Hangman Page (5-4)

Rating: **** (4 stars)

This was a very good match that didn’t have much heat by the start, but they won the crowd over by the end. Excellent stuff here from both men.

Shawn Spears (3-2) vs. Joey Janela (2-3)

Janela attacked spears before their ring gear was off, but as Janela went for a cannonball off the apron, Spears caught him and powerslammed him to the floor. Back in the ring, both men started to exchange chops. Spears started to work over him with some basic offense before throwing Janela right over the top rope to the floor.

Spears took this opportunity to hit a spike piledriver with Tully on the floor. Spears then hit the C4 (Death Valley Driver) for the pinfall victory on Spears.

Result: Shawn Spears

Rating **1/2 (2.5 stars)

Spears smiled and directed traffic to the ring as the medics checked on Janela.

Private Party (Isiah Kassidy & Marq Quen) (3-4) vs. Lucha Brothers (Pentagon Jr. & Rey Fenix) (4-2) vs. SoCal Uncensored (Frankie Kazarian & Scorpio Sky) (7-3) – AEW World Tag Team Championship

Kazarian and Quen started the match, but it wasn’t long before Fenix tagged himself in and faced off with Kaz. Fenix superkicked Kaz and then Sky, and Private Party made their way into the ring. The Lucha Bros superkicked them and then they continued to get the heat on SCU for a little bit.

Rating: *** (3 stars)

Pentagon and Fenix came back into the ring and started to beat down SCU. The lights went out and a second Pentagon appeared! He hit an STO and Angel’s Wings! Christopher Daniels unmasked, saving his tag partners.

This match was mostly fine, but it didn’t have the heat I expected. The action was really good, but they really never got the crowd until the end. The pop for Daniels wasn’t as large as I expected either. However, it was still a really solid match, just not as good as I expected.

Emi Sakura (2-2) vs. Riho (c) (6-2) AEW World Women’s Championship

Emi Sakura started the match overpowering Riho, but Riho, being the champion, was able to stay on top of Sakura until Sakura was able to hit a cross body into Riho that sent her to the floor. Result: Riho (7-2)

Rating: *** (3 stars)

This was another match hurt by little heat, but the quality of the in-ring action was good. Especially with the near falls towards the end of the match. Sakura and Riho shook hands.

Cody Rhodes (4-0-1) w/ MJF vs. Chris Jericho (6-0) w/ Jake Hager – AEW World Championship

It appears that the hard feelings between those two since WCW are still being felt today. Jericho went behind on Cody and Cody broke it into a wristlock, but Jericho countered and Cody ducked down and sent him to the floor.

Cody hit the ropes and hit a suicide dive on Jericho before hitting a missile dropkick for a 2 count in the ring. Cody started working over Jericho’s arm, looking to make the Judas Effect useless. Cody stomped on Jericho’s elbow, to continue to beat him down and neutralize the Judas Effect. Jericho ran at the corner, but Cody floated over and hit a powerslam for a 2 count.

Cody sent Jericho to the ramp and went for another tope, but Jericho moved and Cody crashed face-first into the ramp at ringside. Cody came up bleeding, and he had a horrific cut right above his eye. That looked like a hard-way cut. The doctor checked on Cody as Jericho grabbed a chair and put it in the ring, but he just sat on it and then continued to beat on Cody.

Jericho punched Cody in the face, trying to open him up more, but Cody fired up, but Jericho hit a kitchen sink and started working over Cody again. Jericho started choking Cody in the ring. As the ref was checking on Jericho, Hager punched Cody right in the face. Cody sent Jericho into Hager, then he rolled up Jericho, but as Jericho kicked out he sent Cody right into a punch from Hager. The referee ejected Hager to a huge pop, and as MJF mocked him, Hager attacked MJF. As the ref was checking on MJF and getting rid of Hager, Jericho nailed Cody with the title belt for a 2 count.

Jericho went for the Judas Effect, but Cody caught him and hit the Cross Rhodes! Jericho barely kicked out, and now they both fully had the crowd. Cody and Jericho were on their knees and started exchanging punches, and it ended with Cody hitting the Bionic Elbow, but he only got a 2 count. Cody went for the disaster kick again but Jericho countered with a Code Breaker for a 2 count.

Jericho took his weight belt and started killing Cody with it repeatedly. The ref took the belt from him and Jericho went to the middle turnbuckle. Result: Chris Jericho (7-0)

Rating: ****1/4 (4.25 stars)

This was a great old school match, and Cody and Jericho won the crowd over by the end of the match. The crowd was upset at the finish and chanted “You f***ed up” at MJF. MJF was repeatedly apologizing in the ring, practically in tears. Jericho was breaking Cody in half, and he MJF did want he thought was right.

Cody gabbed MJF’s hand and shook it, so MJF booted Cody low! MJF has turned on Cody Rhodes! The crowd lost their mind booing MJF. The camera focused on Cody, who was laying there in shock. MJF sabotaged Cody, and as he was going back up the ramp, a fan threw a drink on him.

Security took the fan out, but MJF looked at the fan with disgust and then walked away with an evil smirk on his face. The fans chanted Cody as he left the arena. It looks like AEW has a good 2nd top heel in MJF now, and the feud between him and Cody will be great.

Jon Moxley vs. Kenny Omega – Lights Out Unsanctioned Match

Moxley and Omega immediately started brawling. Omega hit the ropes and Moxley hit a huge black hole slam. Moxley rolled to the outside and threw a trash can into the ring. Moxley hit Omega with the lid and both men and then rolled to the outside. Omega threw Moxley into the front row and hit a running dropkick over the guardrail!

Omega took Moxley all around the arena and hit a double stomp through a garbage can. Omega hit Mox with a few beers and went for a moonsault off the guardrail, but Moxley shoved Omega into the crowd and then suplexed him on the floor. Omega and Mox exchanged strikes, seen Omega nail a V-Trigger and Moxley respond with a lariat, and Omega was down. Moxley hit a flipping suplex on Omega that sent him crashing into the mousetraps. Moxley decided he was going to chain wrestle, but not in the way that you would think as he pulled a huge gold chain from under the ring.

Moxley hit a sidewalk slam into the chain and then a neckbreaker onto it for a 1 count. Moxley put a chain around Omega’s face and pulled back, grinding the chain across Omega’s mouth. Omega grabbed a trash can lid and hit Moxley with it. Moxley responded with punching Omega right in the face and locking on a rear-naked choke.

Omega grabbed the lid again and hit Moxley with it several times. Moxley then hit a big uranage in the ring. Moxley went to ringside and pulled out a screwdriver and he tried to stab Omega with it. Omega hit him with the chain and stopped the attack. Mox ran at Omega with the screwdriver, but Omega moved and Mox stabbed the turnbuckle. Mox hit a back suplex on the chain.

Mox tried to hang Omega wit the chain, but Omega fought out and hit two snap dragon suplexes. Omega went for another, but Mox bit him. Omega fought back and hit the snapdragon for the third time. Omega started hanging Moxley with the chain and he almost went unconscious. Moxley fell right in front of the table at ringside.

Omega hit the ropes and hit Rise of the Terminator onto Moxley and through the table! Omega went under the ring and pulled out a bag, and it was filled with broken glass from the table that Moxley put him through! Omega ran the glass across Mox’s hand, and then he stomped the glass to break it apart further.

Omega poured the glass into the ring and spread it out, but Moxley recovered and kicked him. Omega hit an elevated spinebuster on the glass, but Moxley kicked out. Omega then dragged Mox through the glass and locked on a sharpshooter. Moxley had to power up and crawl through the glass to make the ropes. That was insane.

Omega picked up several shards of glass and tried to put it in Moxley’s mouth. Omega went or a V-trigger, but Moxley dodged and hit a German suplex into the glass. Omega stood right up and hit a V-Trigger that led to Moxley spitting out glass. Omega then hit another V-Trigger and Moxley started to climb up the ramp.

Moxley blocked and then suplexed them both into it, and they were both attached to it. The ring crew had to come out and pull both men out.

Moxley started punching the ring crew and tried to suplex Omega through a part of the stage, but Omega fought out and hit Moxley with a ventilation tube. Omega then hit a V-Trigger through the giant Full Gear logo, and Mox was the first man up. The crowd cheered like crazy. Moxley and Omega brawled back towards ringside and ended up back in the ring.

Omega grabbed a piece of the broken table and went back into the ring, but Moxley hit the Paradigm Shift on Omega into the glass! Omega kicked out. Moxley went back to ringside and pulled the apron off and started undoing the padding at ringside. Moxley peeled back the mat, exposing the wood.

Result: Jon Moxley

Rating: ***** (5 stars)

Holy crap, Omega and Moxley killed each other in this match. They brawled all over the arena, bled everywhere, took insane bumps, and Omega was left half dead in the ring. Moxley flipped off the camera saying that’s how much that counted. The Young Bucks came out and looked after Kenny, looking very worried about him.

Show Rating: **** (4 stars)

This was an excellent show from AEW, especially with the very long main event that saw Omega and Moxley go all out for the whole match, beating the crap out of each other. Some matches before Jericho and Cody got the crowd were a bit dead, but the in-ring was very good. The heat hurt them in that case, but everything in the top two matches were excellent. AEW delivered a very fun night of wrestling.

More from All Elite Wrestling

However, AEW was clearly hurt by the lack of character development for some of the wrestlers, with Emi Sakura coming to mind. The crowd loved Riho, but AEW did not provide a sufficient enough reason for us to care about her and Riho.

Overall, the show was still very good, and AEW had a very strong showing, especially when you consider how fantastic the main event was. The next episode of AEW Dynamite is going to be something to see as we are left with a very big question: What is next for Jon Moxley?

Also, what does AEW have planned for Cody Rhodes and MJF? Who will be next to face Chris Jericho for the AEW World Championship? There are also questions about who will take on SCU for the AEW World Tag Team Championship as well.

Will we see Awesome Kong go after Riho for the AEW World Women’s Championship next, or will she continue to take out people that have failed to beat Britt Baker, as Brandi Rhodes seems intent on? Either way, AEW has a ton of options going into the future, and I expect their plans to start being revealed soon.

AEW’s momentum going forward will be very interesting, especially when you consider Hangman Page defeating Chris Jericho. AEW might be setting up an AEW World Championship match with Jericho on TV in the next few months and then a PPV match with Moxley down the line, which I think is the next money match for AEW. I would expect AEW to start giving Moxley a big win streak on TV leading into it, and I imagine a feud will be great for it.
