WWE Royal Rumble 2020 will take place on Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas and live on the WWE Network with a two-hour kickoff show beginning at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT. Here are some results, highlights, and grades for a PPV that shall kickstart the road to WWE WrestleMania 36.

Dating back from 1988, the Royal Rumble is a special free-for-all match in the WWE, in which the winner earns a world championship opportunity at the grandest stage of them all, WrestleMania. The challenge is to outlast twenty-nine other superstars by hurling them over the top rope so that both feet hit the floor. Indeed, success is all about the numbers.

Who will be the Monster Eliminator? Who will be the Iron Man? Who will main event WrestleMania? Three brands collide in two Royal Rumbles on one historic night. As fingers are crossed for an ethereal CM Punk or Edge return, WWE Royal Rumble 2020 will give the WWE Universe the answer to that question as we approach that PPV this Sunday and kickstart the road to WWE WrestleMania 36. Per WWE’s official website, the following matches have been made official for this PPV:

"Men’s Royal Rumble Match Confirmed Participants: Roman Reigns, Brock Lesnar, AJ Styles, Erick Rowan, Randy Orton, Rey Mysterio, Ricochet, Drew McIntyre, Elias, King Corbin, Dolph Ziggler, Otis, Tucker, Rusev, Bobby Lashley, Aleister Black, Buddy Murphy, Braun Strowman, Shinsuke Nakamura, Seth Rollins, Kevin Owens, Samoa Joe Women’s Royal Rumble Match Confirmed Participants: Charlotte Flair, Alexa Bliss, Nikki Cross, Sarah Logan Universal Championship Strap Match Bray Wyatt (c) vs. Daniel Bryan Falls Count Anywhere Match Roman Reigns vs. King Corbin Raw Women’s Championship Becky Lynch (c) vs. Asuka SmackDown Women’s Championship Bayley (c) vs. Lacey Evans United States Championship Andrade (c) vs. Humberto Carillo Grudge Match Sheamus vs. Shorty G"

With that being said, it’s time to plunge into a plenitude of surprises for WWE’s very first main roster PPV of 2020. Let’s get ready to rumble, starting off with the kickoff matches: Shorty G vs. Sheamus and Andrade vs. Humberto Carillo for the United States Championship!

Shorty G vs. Sheamus [Grudge Match]

Sheamus and Shorty G start off WWE Royal Rumble 2020. Hopefully, this lasts longer than 18 seconds. Sheamus and Shorty G start off with some ground based offense and technical grappling.

Sheamus takes full control of Shorty G’s arm. Shorty G attempts to rally back but Sheamus shoves Shorty G’s head onto the mat and delivers a shoulder tackle to take control early on. Shorty G gains back momentum with a running crossbody to Sheamus outside the ring.

Shorty G attempts a quick ankle lock but Sheamus counters and tosses him into the steel post. He executes a shoulder breaker and Shorty G’s ear is bleeding. That’s gonna hurt in the morning. Sheamus maintains control.

Sheamus gives endless beats to Shorty G’s chest inside and outside the ring. Shorty G rallies back with a basement dropkick. He stomps at Sheamus at the corner turnbuckle. He attempts a Moonsault but Sheamus catches him.

Shorty G counters it into a Torando DDT and goes back on the top rope to deliver a Moonsault for the two-count. Sheamus attempts to rally back with a knee strike but Shorty G delivers a Rolling German Suplex for the two-count.

He locks in the ankle lock on Sheamus, but Sheamus gets out of it and attempts the Brogue Kick. Shorty G ducks the Brogue Kick and attempts the ankle lock for a second time but Sheamus gets to the ropes. Shorty G attempts the Crucifix roll up for the two-count. Sheamus kicks out and delivers the Brogue Kick for the pinfall and the victory.

Result: Sheamus

Grade: 2.5/5.0 Stars

Analysis: Some nice spots and counters but not a show-stealer. Overall, the pace was pretty good and it was nice to see a definitive finish. This rivalry did not have to be extended any further. Knowingly, Sheamus won the match and will move on to his next victim: Mustafa Ali. Up Next: Andrade (c) vs. Humberto Carillo for the United States Championship!

Andrade (c) (w/Zelina Vega) vs. Humberto Carillo [United States Championship Match]

Andrade and Humberto Carillo started off this match with a mixture of ground based and aerial based offense. Andrade locks Carillo’s arm as Carillo attempts to rally back in this match. Carillo’s rally results in a shoulder block by Andrade.

Andrade attempts a submission hold but Carillo counters with a Sunset Flip Powerbomb for the two-count. He rallies with a flying crossbody and enziguiri. He attempts a Standing Moonsault but Andrade counters with knees to Carillo’s back.

Andrade now signals for the double knee strike in the corner but Carillo counters and delivers a Moonsault to Andrade outside the ring. Andrade gains back control in the ring with three Eddie Guerrero style Suplexes. However, Carillo counters the third Suplex into a suplex of his own.

Carillo attempts the Moonsault from the top rope but Andrade counters the Moonsault and delivers the Double Knees to Carillo at the corner turnbuckle. Andrade attempts the Hammerlock DDT to finish off Carillo but Carillo counters with a small package pinfall for the two-count.

As they reach a stalemate, they have a knife edge chop contest and Carillo executes a superkick for the two-count. He continues the offense and delivers a standing moonsault for the two-count. These two superstars execute some key counters until they reach the top rope.

Carillo delivers a picture perfect Hurricanrana from the top rope for the two-count. Carillo thought he had Andrade there. Carillo attempts another Hurricanrana but Andrade rolls Carillo up for the three-count and the victory.

Result: Andrade

Grade: 2.5/5.0 Stars

Analysis: Solid match for the pre show. That fluky roll up pinfall is a sign that this rivalry is far from over. Nonetheless, Andrade finally got his first victory over Humberto Carillo. His United States Championship run has been straight fire as of late and it should be interesting to see how his rivalry with Carillo goes from here. Up Next: Roman Reigns vs. King Corbin in a Falls Count Anywhere Match!

Roman Reigns vs. King Corbin [Falls Count Anywhere Match]

Roman Reigns and King Corbin make their way to the ring. King Corbin takes his time to get to the ring but Reigns is sick of it and attacks him right off the bat to start the match. Reigns gains control early on in this match with a Back Suplex.

King Corbin rallies back with a Deep Six and a two-count. He tosses Reigns outside the ring and head shots Reigns with the steel steps. They then take the fight to the crowd but Corbin gains back control after hitting Reigns with a TV monitor. He pins Reigns for the two-count.

Reigns attempts the Superman Punch but Corbin counters with a Chokeslam into the Spanish Announce Table for the two-count. They take the fight back to the crowd and Reigns delivers a Samoan Drop to King Corbin through the production desk table.

Reigns delivers another Samoan Drop to Corbin through the table for the two-count. Corbin rallies back by driving Reigns’ back into the steel crates. To no one’s surprise, Robert Roode and Dolph Ziggler run in to help Corbin beat up Reigns. Usos run in to even the odds and take out RooDolph.

Unfortunately, Ziggler delivers a Superkick to Jey Uso and Ziggler and Roode toss him into more steel crates. Jimmy Uso goes Uso crazy and flies outta nowhere with a flying crossbody to Ziggler and Roode to save his brother.

Corbin runs in to deliver a back suplex to Jimmy Uso onto the steel crate. Reigns runs in to deliver two Superman punches to Corbin, and we’re back to square one. Reigns tosses Corbin into a Johnny’s toilet and tosses it over, leaving Corbin lying in a heap.

They continue to fight in the crowd area. Since this PPV is occurring in a baseball stadium, Reigns and Corbin are on top of the bull pen. Corbin delivers a chair strike to Reigns but Reigns rallies back with a Spear on top of the bull pen for the three-count and the victory.

Result: Roman Reigns

Grade: 3.25/5.0 Stars
