Boom: “The Snake” reminds us he’s always been one of the best on the mic

Wow. I was not expecting Jake “The Snake” Roberts to appear in AEW. Not only that, but he looks good for his age and the noted struggles he’s survived in his personal life. Just seeing Roberts would have been enough for many, including me.

Then he cut that promo, and I couldn’t help but have my mouth agape and eyes wide as he just laid into Cody (and Arn Anderson!). He told Cody to basically suck it up over one match he lost and that he never complained about losing a match in his day. Roberts called Anderson a “one-trick pony,” denigrating the head coach of the Nightmare Family.

His best line, however, was his last line. Roberts said, “A wise man once told me to never turn your back on someone you respect or fear,” and proceeded to turn his back and leave the ring, leaving Cody stunned.

Further, he challenged Cody to wrestle his “client,” who I presume to be Brodie Lee (fka Luke Harper).

In one fell swoop, Roberts reminded older fans he hasn’t lost his touch on the mic, introduced newer fans to the legend that is “The Snake,” left us anticipating who his client is, and set up a new heel tandem for Cody to feud with post-MJF.

Just like in his heyday, Roberts didn’t need to yell or speak too loudly to get his point across. His low pitch and gravelly tone forces fans to listen in, and he is very deliberate with his words. Roberts as the mouthpiece for Lee just screams moneymaker, though hopefully it goes better than whatever has been going on with Shawn Spears and Tully Blanchard.
