Seth Rollins and Dominik Mysterio could have a great match at WWE SummerSlam 2020.
Although it seemed like Seth Rollins and Murphy vs. Rey and Dominik Mysterio would be the most likely WWE SummerSlam 2020 match, the company has decided to go ahead with an even more exciting match involving Seth and Dominik – a straight-up singles matches that will serve as the young Mysterio’s in-ring debut in WWE.
Here are three reasons why this match can overdeliver on expectations and be a great match.
1. Dominik has a lot of talent
There are some fans on social media who like to hate on Dominik Mysterio and believe he’s handed too much, but it’s best to ignore the negativity. A lot of fans like to hate on young wrestlers or hate on anything in general.
Without getting into the argument about “paying dues” (I don’t wrestle, therefore I’m not interested in engaging in this discussion), the reality is that Dominik has looked good on Raw over the last few weeks.
Any time he has been asked to act or show off his moves, Dominik has delivered. That was especially the case on the most recent episode of Raw, in which Dominik pulled off a picture-perfect 6-1-9 that had fans online buzzing about the young Mysterio’s talent.
Dominik can perform. He’s shown it in glimpses, and while wrestling at WWE SummerSlam 2020 in a match against Seth Rollins is another level of stakes, Dominik has the tools to put together a strong match.
2. The pace and emotions of the match
Two great wrestlers make a great match, and that’s probably the simplest statement of the formula of what can lead to an effective wrestling match, But there’s so much more to it than the wrestlers themselves, because two great wrestlers can have a dud of a match. Seth Rollins vs. Dean Ambrose is an example of a feud fans wanted to see succeed between two of the company’s best performers but that flopped because of WWE booking Ambrose poorly.
In this storyline revolving around Seth Rollins, Dominik, Rey, Murphy, and even a few other characters, WWE has actually done a tremendous job of making it feel emotional and high-stakes without any title on the line.
Many fans could have gone without the Eye for an Eye match, but it certainly did kick up the story and gave Dominik a reason to have this huge singles match against the Monday Night Messiah at WWE SummerSlam 2020. There are real stakes here for both men, and Dominik has so many reasons to want to destroy Seth at the Pay Per View.
And so when we talk about these emotions in the context of a match between Seth and Dominik, we have to bring up how exciting the pace of this match could be. It could really showcase the speed and agility of both performers – Dominik looks like a hell of an athlete, and we all know how good Rollins is. Combine that with the brutality created by the emotional stakes, and you have the recipe for a SummerSlam classic.
3. Seth Rollins can pull others up
Seth Rollins is one of the best wrestlers in WWE. At this point, that seems less like an opinion and more like a statement of fact, since he’s been carrying this mantle for so many years. It’s what led to his babyface run as Intercontinental Champion in 2018 when he was putting on great match after great match. Rollins’ popularity was unrivaled, and that’s why he ended up beating the Beast Incarnate twice in 2019.
Bad booking costed him his babyface momentum, but he’s turned it around in a huge way as a heel. This Monday Night Messiah character offers such an interesting paradox of behind-the-scenes and kayfabe, because, in kayfabe, Rollins is a merciless heel. In reality, his character can help clear the way for a new generation of stars on Raw, which is what he refers to in-character as the “Greater Good”. The means he uses are nefarious, but, outside kayfabe, he can help usher in Murphy, Aleister Black, Humberto Carrillo, and Dominik as big stars. You know, if WWE books it that way,
Rollins can only control what he can control, which is his own in-ring performance and promos. The best way for him to help young stars is to put on great matches with them and allow them to shine in segments on weekly television. Dominik and Murphy have looked quite good, and WWE SummerSlam is Rollins’ opportunity to help pull up Dominik and allow him to shine.
When it comes to fulfilling this role, Rollins usually knocks it out of the park. What makes him so good as a heel is that he’s better at pulling others up in a match than anything else.
