2006

SummerSlam in 2006 seemed to be trapped in a wrestling time paradox, as numerous generations of superstars competed against one another. However, whilst it would have been entertaining to see Ric Flair against Mick Foley in an I Quit match in the 1990’s, the action wasn’t exactly as compelling in the new millennium. They had felt real personal animosity outside of the ring which added some intensity, but their advanced years plus Foley carrying this lame duck heel character, it was never going to prove a Match of the Year candidate.

But frankly, they weren’t alone in that regard. Hulk Hogan maintained a SummerSlam tradition of defeating upcoming talent when he bested Randy Orton, whilst the recently reformed DX proceeded to overcome half of the male roster in defeating the McMahons in essentially a handicap match. The saving graces of this card came in the form of a technically astute and deeply personal opening contest between Chavo Guerrero and Rey Mysterio, and the main event. Edge and John Cena showed the chemistry that would lead to one of the best rivalries of the past decade in their heated bout over the WWE Championship.
