There is nothing more sacred than the wrestling mat. Just ask the Ring General.
It's long been recognized that Gunther is one of the best technical wrestlers on the planet. And in just a few short years in WWE, he's become one of the most despised heels in the business. That's what happens when you retire the Greatest of All Time and, quite literally, force him to give up.
John Cena gave Gunther the ultimate rub in his final match. It's the same rub Goldberg gave him months earlier. It's the same rub WWE creative gave him when booking him a 666-day Intercontinental Title reign, which is the longest in the illustrious championship's history.
Gunther is an established star. An easy-to-hate, unbeatable force that WWE will rightfully build up to give the next red-hot baby face a dragon to slay. It might not be the Goldberg streak, but beating Gunther is now a massive deal, as if it wasn't already.
The list of guys who have beaten Gunther in one-on-one action is short. It's a who's who of future Hall of Famers. And after retiring Cena, the list may grow for quite some time.
Every wrestler to beat Gunther one-on-one in WWE:
Opponent | Event | Date |
|---|---|---|
CM Punk | SummerSlam | August 2, 2025 |
Jey Uso | WrestleMania 41 | April 19, 2025 |
Cody Rhodes | Crown Jewel | November 2, 2024 |
Sami Zayn | WrestleMania XL | April 6, 2024 |
Chad Gable | Monday Night RAW | August 21, 2023 |
Gunther has only lost five one-on-one matches since making his WWE main-roster debut. His first-ever one-on-one loss was to Chad Gable on RAW and was via countout. The only wrestlers to pin or submit Gunther in one-on-one action are Sami Zayn, Cody Rhodes, Jey Uso, and CM Punk.
Gunther's 666-day Intercontinental Championship reign ended at WrestleMania XL when Zayn beat him by pinfall. The Ring General went on to win the World Heavyweight Title from Damian Priest, leading to his next loss against Rhodes at Crown Jewel. That was a champion-vs-champion exhibition bout.
Gunther would hold onto the championship until WrestleMania 41, where he lost to Uso via submission. The booking decision was criticized at the time, with Uso's disappointing title reign doing nothing to justify the decision. Gunther would eventually win the title back from Uso before dropping it to CM Punk at Summerslam 2025.

There is a longer list of tag-team matches Gunther has lost, although he was always protected in these matches with his teammates taking the pin. In total, Gunther has lost 10 televised tag-team matches.

Gunther technically also lost the three-team Survivor Series tag match in 2019 as a member of team NXT. However, he was still wrestling as WALTER at that point, not Gunther.
Who has Gunther beaten the most in WWE?
Jey Uso and Sheamus have fallen victim to Gunther the most since his main-roster callup. Both wrestlers have lost twice against the Ring General.
The John Cena retirement match was Gunther's 265th WWE match since being called up from NXT. However, many of those were either house shows or dark matches, which no longer happen as often. Gunther's win against John Cena was his 60th televised win in WWE that wasn't a tag-team match.
Here are those who have lost the most to Gunther, whether it be one-on-one or in a multi-man match:
