After defeating Mr.Perfect the year before at SummerSlam, Bret Hart became a rising star in the WWE. He was going into SummerSlam 1992 during his second Intercontinental Championship reign. His first reign came to end after a shocking loss to The Mountie. Hart however, would win his championship back defeating longtime friend and mentor Rowdy Roddy Piper at WrestleMania VIII.
His opponent at SummerSlam was none other than his brother-in-law Davey Boy Smith The British Bulldog. SummerSlam this year was taking place in the Bulldog’s native homeland of England. In front of a pumped home town crowd, British Bulldog looked to take the championship away from his brother-in-law Bret Hart.
This match was significant because it marked the first time that the Intercontinental Championship was to be defended in the main event of a pay-per-view, without the WWE championship being on the line as-well (Wrestlemania VI).
The match began with a stare-down, then the two tied up working with headlocks and with mat wrestling. Bret then went on a string of quick pin falls with a roll up and a small package but the Bulldog kicked out of both.
The Bulldog would then start to use this incredible strengthen using it to sling Bret into the turnbuckle. Bulldog would then go for a quick roll-up but Bret would kick out.
Bret would then take advantage of the match kneeing the Bulldog in the gut. Bulldog would try to gain advantage back but Bret continued to cut him down. Bret would hit a Samoan drop on the Bulldog pinning him for a two-count.
The British Bulldog would regain control when he monkey flipped Bret with his legs, he would then try to go for an elbow drop from the top but Bret ducked out of the way and just like that Bret was back in control. Bret would toss the Bulldog to the outside.
Bret then when for a body press connecting with the Bulldog from the outside, Bret would then drive the Bulldog into the ring press before going back into the ring. Bret then would hit a neck breaker for another two-count. Bret would connect with a suplex going for another pin, but the Bulldog kicked out of two.
Bret would then hit a back-breaker, then went for an elbow drop from the second rope, covering the Bulldog again, but only getting a two count. Bret would then apply a sleeper hold trying to submit the Bulldog, but the Bulldog was able to reach the ropes for the break.
After attempting another sleeper hold, Bulldog was able to break it off picking Bret up for a superman press but lost his balance and then flung Bret into the ropes. Bulldog would then go on a flurry of offensive going for multiple pin falls and getting two counts on all of them.
Bulldog then hit his finisher the power-slam but yet again Bret was able to kick out of two. Bulldog then tried to suplex Bret, but Bret countered it into a German suplex and another two count.
After exchanging blows in the middle of the ring, Bulldog whipped Bret into the ropes and both clotheslined each other knocking one another out. Bret was then able to connect his Sharpshooter in, but the Bulldog made it to the ropes. Bret then whipped the Bulldog into the ropes jumping leaping over to try and land a sunset flip. However, the Bulldog was able to use his weight to stay on top of Bret pinning him for the three count, and the win.
After the match was over, Diana, who is Bret’s sister and British Bulldog’s wife came into the ring to raise both men’s hands. As fireworks went off, the two men basked in the applause from the 80,000 plus in Wembley Stadium. Bigger things were on the horizon for Bret, as a WWE Championship, and becoming one of the biggest wrestling stars in the world was right around the corner.
