A new champion

Alberto Del Rio. Yes, that Alberto Del Rio, answered the John Cena US Open Challenge last night and defeated Mr. Hustle, Loyalty and Respect to capture the United States Championship. All week long rumors circulated about who the mystery challenger would be for the US Title, with names like Sami Zayn, Daniel Bryan, Samoa Joe and Tyler Breeze being floated around. There were rumors that the WWE was interested in bring back ADR, but that happening so quickly came off as a huge surprise.

Their match was very lackluster, and the finish felt rather rushed. One of the upsides to Cena having the US Title was his ability to put on quality matches night in and night out, and tonight just didn’t have that feel to it.

Del Rio was flanked by a returning Zeb Coulter, who appears to be the mouthpiece for the new champion. Del Rio has the pedigree to keep the prestige of the United States Title intact, as long as the WWE puts him in meaningful, quality feuds until Cena returns for his rematch. The WWE needs to make this version of ADR more like what we saw in Lucha Underground and in AAA . The Alberto El Patron character was some of Del Rio’s best in-ring work, so hopefully the WWE can cash-in on some of that success.

We will obvious see the new champion tonight, but what will he have to say?
