Why the Roman Reigns Stable to Combat Sheamus is a Bad Idea

Roman Reigns may be forming a new stable to combat Sheamus’ League of Nations, but is this a smart move for WWE?

This past Monday, WWE World Champion Sheamus revealed his newly-formed stable of international superstars known as the League of Nations. The group, consisting of Rusev, King Barrett, and Alberto Del Rio, attacked Roman Reigns and his closest allies. Now the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Ringside News) is reporting that Reigns may be forming a stable of his own with Dean Ambrose and the Usos, but is this a good idea?

The short answer is “no”, it’s not a good idea; not for WWE, not for Reigns, and certainly not for the others on his team. The most obvious reason is that it puts Reigns in a holding pattern of sorts; in the title picture but not quite. He’ll be forced to compete in matches against Sheamus’ goons, probably for months, and one thing WWE has had a hard time with is maintaining Reigns’ momentum. The audience goes from wildly in love with him and his Superman Punch to booing him out of the building.

Does tossing Reigns into a bunch of tag team matches solve the problem? No, it only exacerbates it. But it also puts Reigns in the position of team leader, something that he became naturally as part of The Shield due to his charisma and athletic ability. Having leadership foisted upon him will also require Reigns to take part in more promos, unquestionably his greatest weakness. Without someone like Bray Wyatt to spar with on the mic we could see Reigns flounder. Nobody on the League of Nations side is capable of carrying a feud verbally opposite someone like Reigns.

Worse still, it seems the WWE is going to book tough-guy Sheamus as a weak champion who needs help to win and prance around with the New Day. It does nothing to help Reigns if he’s seen struggling for weeks and months against a transitional, cowardly champ.

This deal doesn’t work out so well for Ambrose or the Usos, either. Ambrose has been treading water for months, and being seen as Reigns’ sidekick isn’t going to change things. He’s entering what looks to be an IC Title feud against Kevin Owens, but he doesn’t seem likely to prevail. Now if Owens is revealed as the Canadian member of the ‘League’ then things could get interesting. The Usos only just returned from injury and clearly the WWE has no plans to make them champions again soon; the New Day are too entertaining for that.  Without any new twists on their characters or moveset, the Usos’ comeback has  already stalled out. Will getting mixed up in an 8-man feud help? “When I say Uce, ya’ll say ‘No”‘!

It makes sense for Reigns to seek help in his fight against Sheamus and the ‘League’, but having him form an official alliance seems like a clear step backwards.
