Find out what happened during the Intercontinental Championship match at WWE Payback.
The night after WrestleMania, The Miz defeated Zack Ryder to become Intercontinental Champion. He was assisted when Maryse – his wife – returned to WWE, distracting Ryder when she attacked his father at ringside.
The same night, Cesaro returned to WWE after recovering from a shoulder surgery. Though he lost a fatal four-way match for a chance at the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, he inserted himself into the Intercontinental Championship picture, solidifying a match against The Miz by defeating former champ Kevin Owens.
Follow along to find out what happened at WWE Payback during the match between The Miz and Cesaro.
Prior to the match, Kevin Owens announced his intention to recapture the Intercontinental Championship, and that he would be joining the commentary team for the title match.
The Cesaro Section was in full force as Cesaro made his way to the ring.
Maryse made her presence felt by distracting Cesaro, putting a halt to The Swiss Superman’s early momentum and allowing Miz to focus his attack on Cesaro’s injured arm.
The Miz spent a good portion of the match with Cesaro locked in a modified sleeperhold, even wrapping his legs around Cesaro’s body to apply more pressure. But Cesaro fought out with his pure strength to hit a big vertical suplex.
Cesaro continued his attack with an uppercut train from corner to corner, finishing it off with a dropkick for a two-count.
Cesaro got another near-fall after a superplex from the apron back into the ring.
After Miz avoided the Cesaro Swing, Cesaro hit a springboard uppercut for a two count. The Miz avoided the Neutralizer and sent Cesaro shoulder-first into the ring post. He hit the Skull-Crushing Finale, but Cesaro managed to kick out.
As the men in the ring regrouped, Sami Zayn ran out to take out Owens at the commentary table.
Back in the ring, Cesaro caught Miz with the Cesaro Swing, and transitioned into a cross-face. The referee was distracted when Zayn and Owens ended up in the ring, and he failed to see Miz tap out.
Cesaro let go of the cross-face to remove Zayn and Owens from the ring, but Miz snuck up behind and rolled Cesaro up for a three count, assisted by a handful of tights.
Following the match, all four men – Cesaro, Miz, Zayn, and Owens – continued to brawl, and the end result was Maryse saving Miz while Owens posed with the Intercontinental Championship.
