At NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn II, Samoa Joe defended his NXT Title against Shinsuke Nakamura, here’s what happened in that match.

Samoa Joe has held the NXT Championship since defeating Finn Balor at a live event back at the end of April. Shinsuke Nakamura has gone undefeated since making his NXT debut at TakeOver: Dallas during WrestleMania weekend. Joe has beaten off anyone who stepped up to challenge him in the last few months, whilst Nakamura has quickly become the top babyface in NXT.

This was a match which Joe was angry that NXT General Manager William Regal had granted to the challenger, with the King of Strong Style seemingly quietly confident of winning.

This had shaped up to be a match of epic proportions, and right from the opening strains of Nakamura’s entrance theme (including live violin player), you knew this was set to be a massive spectacle. Nakamura again got in the head of Joe as the NXT Champion got into the ring, with Joe visibly annoyed.

The opening minutes of the match saw both men lock up, big strikes from both men and finally the pair of them looking like neither would get the upper hand. Joe got the upper hand with a headlock, but Nakamura broke free by grabbing the nose. Some big kicks saw Joe go down in the corner, before he bailed out of the ring.

Joe dragged Nakamura outside the ring and they exchanged strikes and massive chops, the last of which left Nakamura on the floor. Back in the ring, neither man could get the upper hand, until Joe hit an enziguri in the corner. Nakamura took Joe down with knees, but then the challenger missed a double knee drop on the apron and hit the floor. Joe followed that with a big dive to the outside, which gained him a two count back in the ring.

Nakamura looked to up the pace, only for Joe to hit him with big kicks, elbows, and chops, The King of Strong Style getting a strong style beatdown. Joe proceeded to stretch his opponent for several minutes then hit a big powerbomb into a Boston Crab then transitioned into a Cross Face submission. With Nakamura screaming in pain he managed to hit a massive kick to the face to gain himself some time to recover.

Nakamura used his impressive knee strikes to gain the advantage, then attempted to lock in a guillotine choke. More knee shots proceeded Joe hitting a rough looking slam in the corner. Nakamura managed to hit a kick from the top rope to leave both men on the mat.

Trading big strikes, before Joe, hit a short lariat that left Nakamura looking out of it. Joe looked to speed things up, only to find himself almost in a triangle choke. Joe reversed that into a Texas Cloverleaf submission but Nakamura made it to the ropes.

Joe locked in the Kokina Clutch submission, but Nakamura managed to reach the ropes with his feet. Joe set his foe on the top rope for a muscle buster, but Nakamura managed to escape and hit a massive German Suplex. Looking for the Kinshasa knee strike, Joe countered into a power slam but could only get a two count.

Joe finally managed to hit the Muscle Buster, but Nakamura kicked out at 2.99, Joe went for a second only to be hit with the Kinshasa for a two count for the challenger. Nakamura hit a knee to the back of the head, then a second Kinshasa to win the match and become the new NXT Champion as the crowd went wild!

In a match that was a brutal war, Nakamura got the big win that sent the crowd home happy, as Joe had to be helped out of the arena by the doctors.
