Who won in the SummerSlam 2016 matchup between John Cena and “The Phenomenal” AJ Styles?

Dean Ambrose may be WWE Champion going into SummerSlam, but it’s fair to say that John Cena vs. AJ Styles is the match for who reigns supreme over Smackdown Live.  This match boils down to one thing: respect.  AJ Styles has wanted it for 15 years, and feels he didn’t get it because people “couldn’t see” John Cena. Styles earned a cheap victory over Cena at Money in the Bank, but lost in a 6-Man tag at Battleground.

The feud has continued after the Draft with Styles vowing to be rid of Cena once and for all. For his side, Cena has heard it all before. Everybody comes in and says they’re going to finish him off and it never happens. But there’s something new in the mix this time: Cena’s part-time schedule. He’s usually off hosting awards shows and reality TV, or appearing on talk shows with Kelly Ripa. Styles thinks that could be the reason why now is the time to do away with the Doctor of Thugonomics, and he could be right. If not, Styles may find his career buried by Cena just as he predicted a couple of months ago.

AJ Styles looked ready for what is clearly the biggest match of his career on the biggest stage, with the crowd clearly on his side!

But Mr. Hustle Loyalty Respect was just as pumped up, even if the Brooklyn crowd thinks he sucks!

It was a pretty even contest early on with Cena using his power, wearing down Styles and slugging him dead in the mouth, and Styles using his speed to the advantage.

It’s moves like this that earned him the name the “Phenomenal One”…

Styles was in charge for most of the early going, but that was before Cena launched him nearly all the way to the Barclay Center ceiling!

STYLES CLASH!! Nobody kicks out of the Styles Clash! Well, nobody but John Cena…

Cena began showing some frustration as the crowd continued favoring Styles, so he answered them with this power move he’s never done before.

The innovative Styles stayed in control, hitting Cena with a nasty Ushigoroshi!

Not to mention this spinning powerbomb, with Styles showing some power of his own.

Who can’t wrestle? John Cena is pulling out every move in the book to defeat Styles.

Cena survived Styles’ Calf Crusher, Styles survived Cena droppin’ the dime on him, and this one is taking a toll on both superstars. Amazing match so far!

How deep are these two digging? Styles broke out the old school Frankensteiner!

But Cena doesn’t need anything that fancy.

An incredible kickout by Styles after an Attitude Adjustment off the top has Cena looking stunned! Has this ever happened before?

He’s looking more stunned than ever after Styles recovers and hits the Phenomenal Forearm for the shocking win!

Bragging rights go to AJ Styles!

Trav’s Thoughts: Incredible match. Dare I call it “phenomenal”? Say what you want about John Cena but he is one of those guys who always brings it, especially against superstars who can really go. And against Styles he brought out everything, pulling off moves we haven’t seen from him in years, maybe ever. The question now is where does he go from here? He’s got another hiatus coming up, so we may not see him for a while.
