The New Day put the WWE Tag Team Championships on the line at SummerSlam. Were Gallows and Anderson able to leave Brooklyn with the gold?

The New Day have spent the last year as the WWE Tag Team Championships. It’s the longest reign for any team in this lineage of the titles. Big E, Kofi Kingston, and Xavier Woods won the titles back at SummerSlam last year, in the same building as this year’s show.

The Brand Extension Draft put the New Day on Monday Night Raw, bringing the tag titles with them. Also going to Raw were Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows, two thirds of The Club.

Since the roster split began, Anderson and Gallows have been a thorn in the side of the tag champs. In an effort to divide and conquer, The Club focused on eliminating one member of the squad. Big E fell victim to “ringpostitis,” and is currently sidelined with an injured groin.

Kofi and Xavier haven’t backed down from the challenge, though. Ignoring the juvenile doctor skits the former IWGP Tag Team Champions filmed, The New Day look to retain their championships at SummerSlam.

Jon Stewart came to the ring, announcing that he was joining the New Day for tonight.

With Stewart playing the part of Big E, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods made their way to the ring.

Kofi had his athleticism working early on.

A double stomp to a standing opponent is no easy feat.

A beautiful tope by Kofi kept the advantage for New Day.

Very few teams have the kind of chemistry the New Day has.

Xavier Woods hit an impressive tightrope elbow drop, covering a decent distance.

More teamwork from the New Day had the good doctors in a world of trouble.

Anderson and Gallows recovered to hit the Magic Killer, and it looked like there might be new tag team champions.

Jon Stewart made his presence felt, and made the save for New Day. But he nearly caught a case of ringpostitis for his troubles.

Thankfully for the retired newscaster, Big E was in Brooklyn, and made the save. The New Day was disqualified, but lived to fight another day.

Championships can’t change hands via DQ, though, so New Day retains. They celebrated with Stewart following the match.
