A look at what happened in the Finn Balor vs. Seth Rollins match at WWE SummerSlam.

Finn Balor’s quick rise to the main roster main event scene culminates at SummerSlam 2016 as he squares off with Seth Rollins to see who’ll become the very first WWE Universal Champion.  Rollins punched his ticket to this match by invoking a rematch clause that he still had after losing the WWE Championship just minutes after winning it, as Dean Ambrose cashed in his Money In The Bank briefcase on him at the pay per view’s namesake in June.

Balor’s course was a bit harder.  On his first night on RAW since being drafted as the #5 overall pick, Finn first defeated Rusev, Cesaro, and Kevin Owens in a four-way match, and the Roman Reigns in a singles match to earn his right to the title match.

Since that night, the two have had a series of promos together, a few skirmishes, and a Rollins was introduced to The Demon King.  This match easily has the best chance to steal the show.  Let’s see what happens.

Rollins is out first to Stephanie McMahon’s approval at ringside.  And here comes The Demon King.

Man, that really never gets old but Rollins doesn’t look impressed.  After the intros we get down to business.  Balor comes out on fire with a dropkick and then a rope flip plancha to the outside.  Balor is going after Rollins left leg, trying to chop down the former champ.  But after it goes back outside, Rollins fires back with a suplex.

Back in the ring Balor goes back to work on Rollins’ legs with a couple different submissions.  Seth isn’t giving in though and drives Balor into the barricade with a powerbomb.

Rollins is in control now, grounding The Demon with a chinlock.  The two trade strikes center ring and Rollins trash talks Bakor in the corner after winning that duel.  Rollins scores with a springboard knee to Balor’s head and then a frog splash for a 2-count.  But just as Rollins is looking like he has control, Finn battles back with a DDT.

A diving forearm, 2 running chops, a running drop kick, and then a crushing knee to Rollins and Finn is in control.  Balor gets countered and Seth goes for The Pedigree which is countered and then the two exchange a beautiful enzugiri/bicycle kick sequence.  Balor lands 1916 for a close 2.

Balor goes for the coup de grace but Seth moves and applies a triangle choke which forces Balor outside.  Balor goes back to the leg but Rollins comes back with a buckle bomb and then a head kick for another 2.  Rollins lands an incredible jumping perfect-plex pin for yet another 2.  Balor manages to force the match back outside and lands a beautiful running dropkick and then back in the ring delivers a top rope double stomp to the back of Rollins head.  For a third time Finn goes  for the coup de grace and this time Rollins blocks it and lands a Pedigree which still doesn’t finish Balor.  Rollins is stunned.

Rollins sizes up his opponent and heads up top for an unsuccessful Phoenix Splash which culminates in a superplex from Seth.  Balor batters Rollins into both corners with dropkicks and finally hits the flying double foot stomp for the victory.
