WWE: Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Orton Rematch Feels Wasted at Live Event
By Dean Siemon
The WWE has decided to have the SummerSlam rematch between Brock Lesnar and Randy Orton during a live event in Chicago. Not have the Lesnar vs. Orton rematch on television feels like a wasted opportunity.
Whenever the WWE wants to continue a feud that got a lot of attention, common sense would think to put it on a pay-per-view event to both increase the buy rates and help boost the WWE Network subscriptions. One can, and probably will, argue that the WWE creative direction seems to have lost that years ago.
The WWE has decided to have a rematch between Brock Lesnar and Randy Orton from last week’s SummerSlam. There were rumors about this match taking place based on Orton making a subtle comment during last Tuesday’s SmackDown promo. However, one would expect the WWE would hold this rematch of Lesnar vs. Orton until something like Survivor Series in November.
What’s that, WWE? You don’t want to wait that long. How about having it within Hell in a Cell in October? I know it’s a little predictable, but might be good if the WWE wants to continue follow the trail of blood Orton left behind at SummerSlam.
Wait, you want to have Lesnar vs. Orton in September? That likely leaves Clash of Champions if you want to have some time to build the feud.
Oh? A WWE live event? In Chicago on Sept. 24? Is everyone okay over there at the WWE creative office?

I can understand having some top stars at live events. Recently, the WWE has made these events more interesting by having titles change hands. A perfect example was when Samoa Joe finally defeated Finn Balor for the NXT Championship.
But this would be the type of match that should be part of one of WWE’s bigger events of the year. No offense to Chicago – I’m from the area, actually – but this shouldn’t be kept to a live event card. There might be some fans who didn’t like the way the match at SummerSlam ended, but that doesn’t mean you keep the show off of WWE television.
It’s highly unlikely that the WWE is going to make the live event a special WWE Network event. Not when the WWE is going to air the Clash of Champions event the very next night. Lesnar vs. Orton needs to be on a WWE PPV card with some kind of buildup. The WWE isn’t going to do a good job of that with Orton currently starting a program with Bray Wyatt.

The WWE also has to consider that Lesnar’s contract only has so many appearances on that. Why would you want to spend that on a live event that isn’t going to be on television? As a result, it just feels like the Lesnar vs. Orton rematch angle is being wasted by having it at a live event.
There can be an entirely new article about how the Lesnar vs. Orton rematch isn’t going to be as good as the one at SummerSlam. Maybe having Lesnar win in dominant fashion against a veteran like Orton is meant to deliver a point – just like the point of the elbow Lesnar drove into Orton’s skull.
