Backlash is the first pay-per-view of the “new era” that will be brand exclusive. If nothing major happens on the show then fans are going to think that it’s okay to skip these events and only watch the “big four” PPVs like WrestleMania, Royal Rumble, SummerSlam and Survivor Series. However, if WWE booked a WWE Title change for this event then suddenly it would feel like a much bigger show.

The new Smackdown Tag Team Champions and Smackdown Women’s Champion will be crowned at Backlash, but is that really enough to excite viewers? They are going to want more.

By doing WWE Title change at Backlash, it could lead to fans anticipating other brand exclusive PPVs in the future such as Clash of Champion, No Mercy, and Hell in a Cell as well as the others that follow.

Smackdown needs to provide the WWE Universe with a memorable show at Backlash. Putting the WWE Title on AJ Styles will accomplish that goal.
