Dean Ambrose defended the WWE Championship against AJ Styles at WWE Backlash. Who came away with the most prestigious title in all of wrestling?

If there’s been one driving factor leading up to the WWE Championship match between Dean Ambrose and AJ Styles at Backlash, it’s Styles’ seemingly unstoppable momentum. The self-professed “face that runs the place” has every right to brag after defeating John Cena stone cold in the middle of the ring at SummerSlam. His ascent to the top has been swift and nobody has been able to slow it down. This is all about Styles making his illustrious career complete by finally winning gold in the WWE.

As such there hasn’t been much storyline support for this one. It’s mainly just been Ambrose claiming that Styles won’t win, but the two don’t have any legitimate beef. They just want the same thing.  Other than the two exchanging crotch shots there hasn’t been much in the way of confrontation, but that’s all going to change tonight.

“They don’t want none” blares as AJ Styles comes to the ring, sporting the Cena armband over his soccer mom haircut.

The champ is ready for what is guaranteed to be his toughest match yet. If he can keep this a fight and not a wrestling match, he has a chance.

What happens when you try to intimidate a guy known as the “Lunatic Fringe”? This.

After a slow start, the match kicked into high gear with this soaring back body drop by Ambrose. Not flashy but it does the trick.

Breathing became an issue for the champ as Styles targets the neck and nose with a vicious chop, a dazzling textbook dropkick by Styles, and more.

This trainwreck of a backdrop is why they call it “high risk”. Awesome spot, but I’m surprised neither man is seriously injured.

Shades of the old Minnesota Wrecking Crew, AJ Styles just shattered Ambrose’s leg with this nasty maneuver. Is he setting up for the Calf Crusher?

He sure was! Almost immediately Ambrose finds himself locked in the Calf Crusher!

The crowd booed as Ambrose got to the rope, perhaps because nobody survives the Calf Crusher. But then Styles hooks him in it one more and Ambrose escaped again in typically unpredictable fashion.

Styles is knocked senseless when Ambrose catapults him into the steel post. If Jim Ross were here he’d say “Oh my Gawd he killed him”!

The resilient Styles stayed in it and nailed Ambrose with this spinout powerbomb, pulling out every move in his arsenal.

“Let’s see if he gets up from this one”, screams Styles just before hitting a gorgeous springboard 450 splash!

Not only did he kick out, he came back and dropkicked Styles right out of the ring. This one’s about to get crazy, which should suit Ambrose perfectly.

Ambrose took the fight against Styles into the crowd, gaining the upper hand by going completely unhinged!

But when the action got into the ring, Styles delivered a cheap low blow after a ref bump, and hit Ambrose with the Styles Clash. Your winner and NEW WWE CHAMPION is AJ STYLES!!

In the end, it wasn’t one of Styles’ flashy aerial moves that did it, it was a dirty trick that Ambrose might have pulled off himself.

Trav’s Thoughts: The match started off slow but they kicked it into high gear down the stretch, and the crowd ate it up. Unsurprisingly, the crowd seemed to be in Styles’ favor throughout, and it will be interesting to see what WWE does with that going forward. Obviously, this is just the beginning of their feud. Styles cheated to beat Cena before beating him clean the second time. I suspect that will be the pattern against Ambrose, as well.
