How Apollo Crews Can Succeed in WWE
By Juan Herrera
Apollo Crews had had trouble finding his place in the WWE since making the jump from NXT. Despite his struggles on the main roster, Crews can still be a star.
In an industry filled to the brim with amazing wrestlers, it takes more than solid wrestling ability to stand out. In order to become a real star in the WWE, you need to be charismatic, athletic and entertaining. This is the problem with Apollo Crews.
He isn’t the complete package. Crews lacks the charisma and personality needed to be a star. This is what separates rookies like Crews, to actual stars in the company like Kevin Owens, AJ Styles, and Seth Rollins.
A lot of wrestlers in the WWE can put on solid matches, but only a small number of them can actually get over with the crowd and perform well at the same time. A lot of this has to do with how these wrestlers are booked.
Crews’ lack of success on the main roster can be partly attributed to poor booking. His only impressive win so far, came in early August when he beat Baron Corbin and Kalisto to become the No.1 contender to the WWE Intercontinental Championship. Crews went on to lose to The Miz at SummerSlam.

Despite his struggles on the main roster, it is not too late for Crews to turn it around and become a star. Crews already has the look of a champion and he can actually put on solid matches.
The only thing Crews needs to work on is his character’s personality. But that may be harder to develop than anything else. Things, like cutting promos and doing backstage interviews, are integral to character development in the WWE. These things give fans a sense of who a wrestler is.
At this point, we really don’t know who Apollo Crews is. We know Crews can wrestle, but that is not enough to make us care about him. He really needs to get better on the microphone.
Crews would also benefit from a heel turn. He is boring as a babyface, but he could make his character work as a heel if he makes a few changes.
One of these changes should center on Crews being an arrogant bully. He should go around beating up smaller guys backstage and picking up wins over credible mid-carders. Crews is already a tall and muscular guy, so he fits the bill of a monster heel.
This new version of Crews could work, but the success of the character will really come down to how well he is booked. Poor booking could lead Crews down a dark path wrestlers like Curtis Axel, Jack Swagger, and Titus O’Neil have already taken.
Strong booking, on the other hand, could give Crews the push he needs to get over with the fans, which is something he needs to do. With a little more practice on the mic and a few changes to his character, Crews can still be a star on SmackDown.
