AJ Styles defended his WWE Championship against John Cena and Dean Ambrose at WWE No Mercy. Who came away with the gold?

How many times will AJ Styles have to prove he’s the face that runs the place? Because that has been what his beef with John Cena has been about since the beginning. Not only did he prove it by defeating Cena clean at SummerSlam, but he then went on to win the WWE Championship over Dean Ambrose at Backlash. Styles then got his first title defense at No Mercy.

And yet this match has been all about Cena and his pursuit of a record-tying 16th World Championship. It’s also been about Ambrose and his claims that Cena has become a lazy part-time superstar. He’ll do anything to get his title back, and considering he’s constantly off his rocker that could lead to something explosive. Styles and Ambrose have both pinned Cena clean in the last month, and do we really think Cena will get beaten again? None of this bodes well for Styles, who is just hitting his groove as Smackdown’s best heel.

So who came away WWE Champion?

Here come the boos from everyone over the age of 15! Must mean John Cena is on his way to the ring to start the show, looking for his 16th World Championship! Anybody predicting a run-in by Ric Flair?

He’s followed the Lunatic Fringe himself, former champ Dean Ambrose.

Who doesn’t want none? Everybody’s itchin’ for a shot at the Phenomenal One, AJ Styles, and his WWE Championship.

The crowd is divided between Cena and Styles, which must be awkward for Ambrose. The match begins with all three men arguing like a bunch of spoiled brats, before they end up colliding head first like the Three Stooges.

Cena’s strength is unmatched and it was on display early, catching Ambrose in mid-air.

While Ambrose and Styles used their speed to gain the upper hand briefly, Cena’s power more than evened things out with incredible displays like this.

But the champ had plenty of innovative offense at his disposal, nailing Cena with this spinout powerbomb!

AJ Styles wasn’t havin’ it when Cena through his usual flurry of offense. The crowd wasn’t havin’ it either.

The champ was rolling, up until the moment Dean Ambrose rolled him up with an amazing reversal.

What’s a good way to beat up John Cena? Styles knows it’s to suplex him on the hardest part of the ring, the apron!

Styles managed to hit the Styles Clash but before he could go for the win, Cena locked in the STF! Will he tap? Not if Ambrose can do anything about it.

Cena was so pumped to finish off Styles he even did the Jordan tongue wag.

What a mess! Cena and Ambrose locked in submissions on Styles, who tapes out…but to who? Who’s the winner?? Who’s the champ??

And the fight goes on after the bell! This one’s not over yet as the match has been restarted!

The match restarted, Styles introduced a steel chair into the action, nailing Cena and defeating Mr. Hustle Loyalty Respect for the third time in a row!

Your winner and still World Champion, still “The Face that Runs the Place”, and the “Champ that Runs the Camp”…AJ Styles!

Trav’s Thoughts: Excellent match that told an amazing story which the crowd went crazy for. Turns out WWE’s decision to move this to the opener was a smart one because it had a ton of energy with Cena showing off his power moves, Styles pulling off his innovative offense, and Ambrose mixing it up. This is Styles’ third win over Cena in a row, and honestly it’s unclear where the latter goes. Styles also has no obvious challenger but maybe that will change by the night’s end. Possibly Randy Orton?
