WWE WrestleMania 33: John Cena, The Miz Sold Their Feud with One Excellent Promo
How did John Cena and The Miz along with Maryse and Nikki manage to sell us all on a feud and a match at WrestleMania we didn’t want to see originally?
A few months ago we probably did not think that either The Miz or John Cena would be involved in a feud leading up to WrestleMania. We definitely didn’t think that their partners Maryse and Nikki Bella would also be involved, but here we are. This feud with a Mixed Tag Match with these four has been speculated about for awhile, and in recent weeks the seeds have been sown. On this week’s Smackdown Live, in a Miz TV segment the feud blew up and suddenly they have made us all care and want to see this happen.
But how did this happen? All it took was a fantastic promo between The Miz and John Cena to sell us all on this. At first The Miz would not allow John Cena to even speak, and he got out all of his frustrations that have been built up for ten years. The Miz has had an amazing year, and he was absolutely the MVP of the company for 2016. The man managed to make himself relevant again, make the IC Title mean something and has been putting on great matches. An eventual feud with John Cena was bound to happen sooner or later.
His words were extremely passionate and he did not hold back, which is what makes him such a compelling talker. When John Cena was finally allowed to talk, he did not hold back either. He addressed a lot of issues that people have with him, and he even referred to facing The Undertaker at WrestleMania, claiming that is the match he wanted but did not get it. Their back and forth was fiery and they share a lot of chemistry together, their words sold this feud. It really sold a need to see them lock up in a match, and we will see that at WrestleMania.
Having two real life couples in a feud together is an interesting idea, they are of course together in storylines as well but this is really the first time we have seen John Cena and Nikki Bella together on TV, away from Total Divas and Total Bellas. Their chemistry is there, and the kiss and embrace at the end of the segment was great. The Miz and Maryse getting out of there was the right way to end this moment, everything they all did sold this. A match that I didn’t care about, is now one I can’t wait to see at WrestleMania, and all it took was a fantastic promo and segment to get us all invested.
They still have time to continue to build this up, and next week we will see John Cena and Nikki Bella team up to take on James Ellsworth and Carmella. Strangely enough this is something I want to see, and it will be entertaining. Those two need something to do, and seeing John and Nikki team up will be a great preview of what they will be like in the ring. It would be quite a moment if The Miz and Maryse cost them the match, and in fact I hope they do get involved. These four are going to light things up leading into WrestleMania, and they all deserve props for doing a great job and getting us all behind this feud.

This whole segment was the perfect example of how to properly sell a feud, that scripted promos are not always necessary. These two spoke from the heart and they knew exactly what to say and how to say it. There is no denying both John Cena and The Miz are masters on the mic and when they are allowed to go with the flow they do make magic. Even Maryse managed to come across really well, although it would have been sweeter if that slap was harder. As a long-time fan I am proud of what they did on Smackdown Live, and I am looking forward to what else they do.
