Shawn Michaels vs. AJ Styles Could Have Happened at WrestleMania 33

Shawn Michaels appeared on the latest episode of The Sam Roberts Wrestling Podcast and revealed that he was offered a match against the Phenomenal AJ Styles at WrestleMania 33.

Shawn Michaels has not wrestled since 2010 when the Undertaker defeated him at WrestleMania 26. However, the Heart Break Kid was considered as a potential WrestleMania opponent for AJ Styles this year, according to the Show-Stopper himself.

"“They didn’t have an opponent for AJ at WrestleMania. I said that I hadn’t been asked because I hadn’t—but then I was. I said, I wish that young man was here 10 years ago, man. I honestly do. I think he’s very talented.” said Michaels on the The Sam Roberts Wrestling Podcast."

This news is sure to further annoy the fans who are already discontent with the Phenomenal One’s current opponent, Shane McMahon. The argument in favor of the Styles Vs McMahon match is that any match with Shane O’Mac in it is a high profile contest and will surely draw that casual fan in.

Using that same logic, the former leader of the Bullet Club against the former leader of D-Generation-X would have definitely been one high profile draw, if not legendary. Especially on the grandest stage of them all. That would not only draw the casual viewer in but surely make the company a lot of money in the process.

Michaels turning down the match vs Styles at WrestleMania is just another punch to the gut for hardcore fans. The first was when nothing came out of Styles tweet displaying a fan-made promotional poster, featuring the two superstars in a stare down.

What followed was pipe dreams of a once in a lifetime encounter between Mr. WrestleMania vs Mr. Total Nonstop Action. Fans held out hope that said encounter could actually manifest since a Goldberg vs Brock Lesnar rematch (that no one was clamoring for) was fantasy booked into reality.

However, we must respect Michael’s wishes. He is 51-years-old and happily retired. If only AJ Styles was in the company 10 years ago.
